I think this might be a fun question to bat around:
Is it better to be GOOD at a few things on offense and be able to run those things well. Or is is better to take on facet of the game and really be perfect at it. Then throw in another phase to polish it off.
For example I think of some of those splitback veer teams where that IS what they do. Or a wing-t team that runs the ball really well using 2-3 series of plays and hits you with 1-2 play actions they run perfectly.
So the question is alot run well, or a little run to perfection.

OK OK ME FIRST!!!! ;D
My personal ideal team is one that is smart and can do a lot of things good, not great. This philosophy isn't perfect for the high school game, better in the college game.
My thinking is that if you can do multiple things good, you can coach them and with experience they can improve. If you only do one thing great, then your team never grows. Granted doing that one thing great means that your team has to be stopped from doing it. But when you face a team that is good at stopping what your doing, then what? You basically dug yourself a hole and buried yourself in it.
This week my team is facing the quintessential team doing one thing great. We are a I-formation team, but can use varied formations and throw the ball around. Our bread and butter is the outside veer, but we can do other things pretty good. The team we're facing....Double Tight, Full House backfield, run it up the gut! I'll let you know how the game goes....
P.S. this team hasn't lost a league game in 7 years..lol...ouch. BUT this is my first year as the Oline coach...watch out!

no scheme is bullet-proof, so if you can do one thing great - If you are taken out of your 'base' package.....now what?

if you do just one thing, then it gives the defense all the time they have to be great against it
I think you can do multiple things within an offense if the structure of the offense is set up right. If you have a modular approach that allows you to add different backfield actions with different blocking up front so you can be great at a few simple things and make it appear to be many things, even though it is not.

i think there are certain things in every offense that you want to be great at and be able to use it whenever you want. but you also need to have other weapons in the arsenal. using the veer example, a team can be great at running isv and osv, but the deep ball, play action and te dump need to be good to keep the defense on their heels.

Every team/scheme has to have something to hang their hat on when they need a first down, a must score, or base for setting up your tendancies for the next opponent that they have to focus on to beat you. Wing-T has to run the buck series well, pro-I needs to be effective running iso, pitch and stretch, spread needs to run zone and quick game well. A few that you run great is the foundation, and a bunch of good plays on top of them will put you over the top offensively.

Good discussion and I agree. I used to have the "this is what we are going to do..." philosophy. Now I take the tool box approach. You need to have enough tools in your tool box to do the job. If one approach is not working you better be able to use another way of moving the ball. That being said I think you can try and do too much and not be good anything. You need something to hang your hat on and then some things off of that. Then something that if your opponent takes that away they leave themselves open for something else.

I always think I've seen it all. The use of metaphors is uncanny. I feel tears welling up right now. Excellent work.
