Our district is going through the budgeting process. One of the ways that they are looking to save some money is by changing some of the administrative responsibilities. I am going to have to give my input on this in the next week or so, and would like input on this from some of the guys on the board. So here it is, which of the following positions would you rather be in.
Scenario A
A strong athletic director who is very supportive of football. In my interview with him, he said "Having a winning football, basketball, and wrestling program is the most important thing the athletic department can do for the school." He controls our budget, scheduling, etc but basically does so by following my (HC) suggestions. He is very good with $$$ situation, and even though we have a budget, he will often find unused money from other sports/programs to help us get bigger ticket items (editting system, weight room improvements, headsets, sled, etc.)
Scenario B
Someone else is hired and the AD position becomes a much weaker position. That person becomes responsible for the day to day operations of the department (scheduling refs/fields etc) and will do little more. The HC will have complete control over hiring, budget, scheduling games, etc. The head coach is given a number for budgeting and out of that money is responsible for coaches, transportation, equipment, and basically everything else in the program. That number is the bottom line and if you need 10 cents more, you aren't going to get it.
Like I said, I don't really know which way I am leaning on this. I would obviously love the additional control from scenario B, but I think that since our current AD has such a good grasp of the overall budget and is behind uswe are given more opportunities than what we will have just working as football program. Thanks for all of your input, I am very interested to see what people have to say on this.
