I heard a coach at the Baltimore Glazier clinic this weekend say his kids practice in girdles and volleyball kneepads with shorts all season to keep them fresh. They only wear pants during walkthrough and games obviously. Just wondering if anyone else out there does this? Pro's/Con's? Seems like a good idea, just looking for other perspectives.

Where was he from? That may determine the validity of his experiment.

We scrimmage a team that does that. They have since gone away from it. They looked liked dorks wearing shorts and volleyball kneepads and I don't see how it would keep you any "fresher". You still need to wear the same amount of pads to practice and if you pants are to small, get a larger size.

We do this on certain days of the week. Mainly, earlier in the year when temp is hotter. I don't know if it actually is any cooler for our kids, but apparently the HC thinks they feel this way, so we do it. I can take it or leave it, personally

I've always thought that the kids should practice in what they'll be playing in. I want to keep it as much like the game as possible.

The past 4 seasons I've not gone full pads at all once we start playing games. I've been coaching freshman who play their games on Wednesday evenings- I never saw the need to have real physical practices right before or right after games so we'd practice in shells(it's also AZ in Aug, Sept, & Oct in the early part of the season temps of 105+ are not uncommon). We went 29-8 over those years and were generally more physical then those we played. You can still get after it well enough to get done what you must.

We go Mondays in Shells and pants w/o pads. The kids just seem to go faster - we do a lot of running and special teams. Tuesday and Wednesday we go full gear/and full speed. Thats just us.
