One thing I really dislike about having helmet stickers is how hard it is to clean the helmet after the season. When you take the stickers off, you have a lot of goo left on there. We use "Goo Gone", but even then we have some that don't clean real well. Anyone have any better ideas?

Send the helmets in to be reconditioned.

Send the helmets in to be reconditioned. I second this. In fact, I thought it was required that you send them in every year just to be checked out, etc., and they cleaned the stickers as part of the whole process. Maybe just our school requires it. Anyway, I want to say the cost is very reasonable considering what they do for you.

You guys recondition every helmet every year? Our Riddell guy takes 30-40 of our 125ish helmets to be reconditioned, but not all.

Our County requires reconditioning every year, the schools pay for it. They now also require at least a 4 Star helmet and only supposed to purchase 5 Star from now on, can use the 4 Star until they age out after 10years. When they instituted this we lost 48 helmets that were not rated high enough and all still had 2-3 years left. A grant paid for 20 helmets but he had to fundraise to purchase more to suit everyone up.

What are 4/5 star helmets? Never heard that before.
What do you do about paint and disinfect them if they aren’t sent back?
Just curious everywhere I have been all are sent back every year.

If you send them in to be reconditioned, they'll obviously take off the decals and clean the helmets.
For the helmets we didn't send in to recondition, we just peeled the old decals off and we never really had much left on there. There wasn't much to clean. Maybe we were just lucky.

We send any helmet Or shoulder pad that was used during the season back in. And any that needs the recommended 2 year even if it wasn't used. Gotta be proactive , and the kids play with more confidence believe it or not with new or near new looking equipment is what we have found too.

A local tv station did a story on low rated helmets and even did open records request to get our inventory from reconditioning. Norton Healthcare gave each of the 20 football playing public high schools a grant to purchase 20- 5 star rated helmets each. Then we had a sticker saying Norton Healthcare on the helmets purchased as part of the grant. It was a one time deal and not part of a national thing.

What is a part of that process that makes it worth the $?
