I originally posted this on the old coach, but I gues people would rather talk about shug than football... any help would be appreciated
Looking to add to my files....
Wondered how many of you have position expectations that you give to your players during the first of the season. That way they know what you as a coaching staff expect from the position they will be playing and help the kids develop these mentalities and skills . I did this for baseball and the kids understood exactly what was demanded from thier position and it helped them understand what i was doing in certain game & practice situations.
I have some expectations that I have put together for rb's & wr's and would like to elaborate more on these positions as well as the rest of the positions. both offensively and defensively...
any help would be appreciated!!!!!

I don't have an expectations list in and of itself. Each position coach at my school does give out a postion manual. It is basically a smaller more refined version of the coaching manual we give to explain things to our jr hi coaches beyond our meetings with them. Basically a resource for the jr hi coaches. For the kids, it has expectations in there, as well as basic drills, techniques for them to study and get a leg up on their competition if they choose to study it.

I don't have mine here. But basically it is philosophy stuff, rah rah stuff, basic terms, basic drills, basic rules for blocking schemes.
Don't have a template. I have all the other stuff saved in different forms for other areas, so I just smush them together and take out the stuff I don't want the kids to have.

the one i give the qb's is about 6 pages. it covers expectations as well as describes in detail the mechanics of the basic aspects of playing qb --- stance, exchange, footwork on run plays, drops, etc.

TYPE OF PLAYER WE LOOK FOR ON DEFENSE
1. Wants to play defense—If he doesn’t want to there, he won’t help.
2. Hitter—Is not afraid. Looks for contact.
3. Quick—Great reactions. We prefer quickness to size. Big and quick is perfect
4. Coachable—Has to take care of his responsibilities. No excuses!! Do what he is assigned to do.
5. Instincts—Goes to the ball well. Has a feel for the game.
6. Heart—Has no fear. Will give everything he has on every play; practice or game.
I also let them know what we look for in each defensive position, but I didn't have that saved, so I would have to type it out. I will save that for another day.

We have player expectations and define it even more with physical expectations. It is written down and stored in the playbook as to what we desire. Of course, every position starts out the same with size, speed and intelligence. Since we do not have much of any of these 3, we must continue to define it. The lists have many points other than the 3 mentioned prior. that a player may exihibit to help himself get on the field.
