Pretty straightforward. We have a player that is graduating and will be attending a state university. He asked me about how he can get involved with football as a student manager. Any idea who I'd reach out to or tell him to reach out to for this?

Kind of a quibble: Although the DFO will do the hiring I think that contacting the local recruiter is the best bet.

Try the Equipment Manager. That is who is in charge of the student managers. I was one at Ohio U back in the day. Most programs will gladly take thew help.

I would agree if there is a good relationship between that recruiting coach and the school. If you have to ask who recruits your area, I would say it might be best to go to the source.

Any idea who I'd reach out to or tell him to reach out to for this? Ask the EQ manager. The DFO is usually never responsible for the hiring of student managers. At UConn, us equipment managers were a seperate entity from the HC/DFO and our direct boss was the EQ manager. But the kid should be the one reaching out, not you.

I'd call whichever coach at the school you were most familiar with first. He can then get you in touch with the manager or DFO. In some cases they may be able to work this out as a work study so he can receive some money for being a manager.

Being a student manager and trainer are good options but one that is often overlooked is the video crew. Those crews are smaller so typically give bigger scholarships and are less competitive to get into.
I was a student videographer as an under grad at Ole Miss; it paid a full scholarship 3 of my 4 years there. It's a great gig if he is interested. Best person to contact is video coordinator which should be listed on the staff page of any university.

I agree..and I think that going the video route as opposed to equipment could probably lead to more coaching opportunities in that program if that is what the goals are for the original poster's former player.

Just be sure to make him aware that video is a very different job that managing. To put it plainly, video is lonely, boring work.

Was fortunate that a local HS coach took a job their right before the NCAA rules passed limiting opportunities. I reached out to him and the player will be working this year.
