cookie and I were talking and this came up
this is one of the things that gives us some trouble\
DE's that are not well coached (as most of our stuff is based on the idea that they are well coached and somewhat predictable reactions that we can take advantage of)
what other kinds of things like this can you think of?

D-linemen in general who get lazy.. and when they are killing us on the rush the first 2 downs of a series.. and they take the 3rd off and they happen to lazy themselves right into the lap of our screen catching back..

Poorly coached DEs...gotta agree with that. It knid of makes me wonder if we should re-think DE play.

Poorly coached Left tackles. Had a series of plays last year against Ferdale, we ran left, right, left. I wasnt able to take the OL that year, so I had to leave in the hands of my assistants. Anyways, four plays in a ROW our left tackle blocked the wrong man, and in EACH case, the guy he was SUPPOSED to block tackled our RB. *sigh*
Left tackles are left out in the dark more often than not, even if you swap sides. Also, for a right handed kid, you have to re-learn how to step. I still have to play on the left side in Alumni games etc, because I instinctively step left to cover the inside.

Poorly coached OL play hell with our DB's reads. We read the OL for high/low hats and it works 99% of the time. There are times, though, when every play looks like a pass. |

Poorly coached defenses with athletes. We play about two of these every year.

that is especially true in practice. Hard to get a read with linemen who are backs or receivers normally, but have to play scout team linemen.

That and the overweight lineman who wants to be the opponent's star wide receiver or the stud runner who you are trying to figure out how to stop.

odd stuff?
hows this- we were in a tight game (jr high plays on thursday afternoon) and we trailing but driving for the go ahead score...the high school girls field hockey team was beginning to show up at the stadium for a big game that might send them to the playoffs (or whatever) and the athletic director says to me "Steve, Im thinking of calling your game so the hockey team can warm up"....she wasnt much of a football fan...we lost by 2.
Heres another good one...with two games left in our season the grounds keepers/maintenance department (whoever) puts fertilizer, (cow turds i think) and pokes those holes in the field and leaves the lil " mud plugs" all over it and heres the best part...THEY TOOK DOWN THE GOAL POSTS! lol....
One of my favorite ones of all time though, we had refs flag us for our double wing cut block by the te...i asked for an officials conference ...they informed me " WE HAD A MIDNIGHT MEETING AND DECIDED NO MORE CUT BLOCKING IN JUNIOR HIGH".
now, as far as players go...
kids that pull the wrong way
kids that "trip over the chalk line" on kickoffs
kids that peek into the backfield on man to man coverage
not odd, but it gives me trouble...great tailbacks.
kids that "forget" to cut block
heres a big one...trainers who sit a kid out for bruises or small cuts. trainers that move really slow in making decisions...(we have small rosters)
cheerleaders that say "block that point" when the other team isnt kicking but going for two. (man that annoys me)
kids that go in motion when they arent suppossed to
kids that go in motion too early or too late
kids that turn to watch the freaking play instead of blocking
poor fakes
selfish reads on option by selfish qbs
annoying loud parents who coach from the stands (contradicting what we are teaching)
bad grades...thats a biggie.

thought of a couple more...
had a kid kicked off the team two days before a game, his backup was trained then quit the next day
one kids mom complained that he wasnt getting playing time, he begins to earn it then she promptly removes him for two weeks "to go to Canada" which she said "wed been planning this all year he has to go"...when the kid returns to the team, he practices hard and promptly screws himself up on "mischief night" by hitting himself in the face with a brick.
we once had a bus "didnt show"...that bus had our starting center and defensive tackle in it ( our school was so small that we bussed in kids from another school...)
this one gave me trouble too...a coach who didnt collect jerseys from the kids the year before...we went into a season with the kids having screwed up jersey numbers, some had the same numbers....
....once had an AD tell me i had to do "crowd control" at my games. there wasnt even a rope to keep the parents away from the kids. two coaches, 55 kids and i had to control parents too???
...hows this, one game no refs showed up...the AD forgot to pay them or something.

heres another one..- once during practice, we are repping our offense hard...suddenly my fullback looks down and hes crushed a baby rabbit...they were every where, seems we stirred up a burrow of bunnies. minor distraction lol.

Vanilla, "straight ahead" offenses give us trouble, because we play so many wing-t / double wing / straight t type teams that our whole defense is designed around reading and defeating blocking schemes. Once a year, we play a (terrible) team that just runs straight ahead man blocking on every play, and our defense has trouble with that.

TRY USING BACK KEYS INSTEAD OF GUARD KEYS ON THAT TEAM. JUST AN IDEA. MAN UP AND ATTACK YOUR KEY.

Defensive players that play slow. Your running back attacks the line and is ready to cutback and there's a slow guy from the backside who is unintentionally playing great cutback technique.
A really odd thing--slow offenses: We played this last year and were so fast but this team had WR's that ran slow routes. Seemed like there was always some kid somewhere that you think "how did he get there?" Of course the QB threw slow too so we actually could react to his pass.
-An opposing coach who makes absolutely no sense in his playcalls and game plan. This is the guy who doesn't have tendencies NOT because he self-scouts so much but because he just calls whatever he wants whenever he wants. We play a team that comes out with a million different formations and a million different looks and a million different plays. I have no idea how his team knows what to run.
But the craziest of all is when you see him on film and you realize that during the next week he will play some 5-wide, some single wing, some wishbone, Unbalanced, and you stand a good chance of seeing all of it on the same series.

We have one team in our league that plays every defensive front imaginable. When we review film on this team we may find that they ran - literally - 25 different fronts in the last game (with multiple coverages for each front). They are a horrible defensive team, but they have some of the best athletes in the league, so they almost get away with it. They do nothing well and are almost always confused. Their DC gives the kids wrist bands and he numbers his defensive fronts/coverage combinations - sequentially. Last year we heard him shouting for his 72nd different defense!
It just makes it difficult to prepare the offense for what they might see.

not a football one but a baseball one. friend of mine upmires and the AD only paid him for 1 game and expected him to do a double header.
needless to say, there were no balls, only strikes for both teams in the second game. wild pitch, strike, ball in the dirt, strike, only walk were hits batsman.
coaches were upset but understood.
the AD was pissed at him and he said you will never ump here again. needless to say the AD tried this with other umps. now word has gotton out and they can't get umps now.

Opposing LBs who turn their backs at the last minute to pulling guard, and we get flagged for illegal block in the back. Had one game in which this happened a couple times, including a TD called back.

heres a good one- in our last game in 2004 a team had one of their tackles wearing jersey number 24...throughout the game they had 7 guys in eligible jersey numbers...it made it tough on my sam backer (who covers the te)...accident? i dont think so. the refs just wouldnt flag it...

my favorite odd problem is we line up in circus( a unbalanced set) and I have had teams call time out becasue they did not know what to do. do you cover the tackle who is split out wide?
when you run crazy formations and shift to them, it causes trouble usually for kids. however kids to learn fast, after about 2 or 3 times they usually catch on so you need to have some different plays off it.

Officials ask you in pre-game conference if there's anything you'd like them to look for (I always assumed that meant from the other guys) and if they call it at all, they call it on you.

Sorry guys, but i'm one of "those coaches" at least i was for a game. My first year at my school as HC and we were playing an opponent that we knew had us totally outmatched. (they wound up losing the state championship by one point, we ended the season with one win) We came out in a different front every play for the entire first quarter! 65, 43, 44, 50, 35, eagle, under, bear. They never crossed midfield and turned it over 3 times. Our kids were bright, just not very talented. At the end of 1 the score was 0-0! A victory in my book.....but the final was 46-0. On a side note, in year two we played them again for the section championship and lost 20-14. A sure sign of progress.
