What to do after a frustrating game?

LOL, in the days when I was still drinking a 6 pack of Bud light was how I dealt with a frustraing game.

I always classify penalties into two classes- Physical and mental. Physical penalties result when a kid is just flat out playing hard and gets called for a face mask or is a bit late on a hit (when it was clearly obvious or should have been a kid was down or out of bounds is another thing) Mental penalties are lack of focus and pride in performing at as high a level as you can. For example we had two penalties that negated scores Friday both were WR's moving early on ............ a trap and an inside ISO- inexcusable no matter how you try to explain it.

Clearly you want to treat each type a bit diffrently. In the past we did an up down for each penalty yard the day after the game. If I attributed the penalty to hustle and getting after it that yardage did not count. If I deemed it a "cheap shot" it was triple.

Mental errors can be fixed with simple repetition. EVERY offensive drill we do is on a cadence; they pay for jumping off sides. EVERY defensive drill we do is on OL movement; same deal, jumping off sides results in penalties.

Also, if you have a lot of verbiage tied into your play calling, try focusing each position on what they actually need to know. Here's an example with my OL-

We call- "I Right, Zoom, 917, T flare, Lobo, on 1"

All the offensive line needs to know is LOBO; their pass protection scheme, and the cadence.

Our OL knows the playbook and our terminology; but I focus them in on exactly what they need to know.
