What are the core values in your program? How many do you have? How do kids know what they are?

This is what we did: - I explained to the kids exactly what we were trying to do.
- I created a Google Form that asked a bunch of questions such as, "How would you like your opponent's to think about the way you play?"
- Once you have the responses, I just grouped the similar values together.
After we had some values, we selected core values to spell out the name of our mascot "PANTHERS." We made the kids be able to recite our core values before they got their helmet decals. I made posters with the core values on them as well as pennants that went in their spirit packs. We had coaches talk about them at the start of most practices especially early in the season.
We ended up w/ too many. Jeff Janssen outlines five or six basic categories in his book on championship culture. Results, relationships, character, etc. I think I'd try to pick one value for each of those categories. You may find that you only want two.
Really, we have two main core values: Relentless Effort and Selflessness. Our program motto is "Hoka Hey," which means, "It's a good day to die." One the one hand, we ask our kids if they knew this was their last game, practice, etc., how would they want to play it? On the other hand, we want our players to die to their selfishness and be willing to sacrifice what they want for what is best of the team. We talk about these more than the others but we do talk about all of them.
Hope that is helpful.

I wanted our kids (10 kid Leadership Council) to come up with them (or feel like they did)
if they come from them then it improves the buy in
i did a little suggestive psychology to steer them in the direction i wanted
they gave me their top 5 on ballots and i added them up to get the winners
ended up getting the 5 that i had already mapped out after reading Coach jackson's book
Monday - Energy Tuesday - Competition Wednesday - Toughness Thursday - Family Friday - Finish
I have them printed up on paper hanging up in my classroom (where most of the team spends lunch) and in 2 spots in the weight room
This is just a rough thing for now, going to have them printed up nice on bigger poster style paper so they can really look nice and POP off the wall

I'm in the process of implementing this now. During our season end exit interviews I asked each player: "what is one value that you want our football program to be know for?"
Now I'm either going to tally it up (most responses = core value) or relist the top responses and have the players vote on their top 3 via a google survey.

Are we talking about what kids should learn from participating in HS Football, or how they are going to play the game?
I think that's two different discussions.

We use EAT in everything we do - classroom, practice, games, life.
Effort Attitude Trust
We expect great effort, great attitude, great trust. You can't expect to be productive in anything you do without them.

when i was in the air force our core values were: Integrity First Service Before Self Excellence in all we do
I remember them because they were drilled into me when I was in basic
when I actually got to real war...the core values changed to
blow chit up don't die
point being...core values are awesome for the website and the off-season brotherhood dinner...when the lights come on..kick peoples a$$

I've used Fast Disciplined Tough for years. Think I have to change that though because FDT is causing some political arguments

Very admirable.
My question is - HOW are you going to inject them?
