You know, there is a pretty good argument that "spread" is what has caused the rise in concussions. Because of wide outs being left out to dry, blind sides on qbs. Not to mention The defensive players applying the hits What led to all the dead football players with CTE? Was that the spread offense as well? Concussions aren't even the main cause of CTE, though. The #1 contributor, according to most of the research, is "subconcussive" hits, mostly to linemen and LBs/RBs banging in the front. Also, up until the last few years, there wasn't much emphasis on concussion as being all that serious. There weren't many protocols in place and helmets, especially really old ones from before the 80s, were pretty shoddy in terms of protection. For all the men who played football, the cognitive and mental problems later in life might not all be just CTE. That's gotten to be a knee jerk response, but depression is very real, particularly in highly driven middle aged men who can't do the things that defined their whole identities.

I think there are more kids playing that are basketball types or baseball types now that football is fun and not so so boring, don't you larrymoe? Once the game becomes faster and more like basketball on grass you get more of those fragile kids trying to play a real man's game. I heard a guy say this once while he was trying to sell a new offense. yes, the spread has allowed Non tough guys/kids to play . I'm not saying playing concussed makes u tough. I'm saying guys that just want to run around 7-7 style. Has it saved some schools their football programs yes it has. But now there is so many more prima donnas playing... Running around and catching passes is a lot easier then hitting the blocking sled or practicing taking on the lead.

What led to all the dead football players with CTE? Was that the spread offense as well? Perhaps all the PEDs they used, but for some reason that anglee is being totally left out for all concussions all the time. Heck, even the kid fresh out high school that killed himself had used roids. U are right, Tim brown mentioned that the other day. He said so many players drank way to much and other drugs. We all know those effect the brain as well. Using himself as an example. He said he never drank or used drugs and never had a concussion in 18 years of NFL. So if you count college and high school . Nothing in 26 years of playing. Not to mention junior stuff. And why has nobody brought up soccer has more concussion, and headers are being outlawed? Heck cheerleading as the most injuries period out of all activities .

Just read through the whole thread again. Diet is likely the #1 cause of tau. Dementia is now being referred to as Type 3 Diabetes. So maybe it was all the Gatorade? I'm sure genetics, helmets, repetitive blow, etc all play a role in this. Sleep amount and quality also likely play a role. Very interesting thread in several ways.

Also thanks, finally went ahead and ordered Perfect Pass. Probably won't get to it til summer, but been meaning to read it for years. A thread on here about it got me to Empire of the Summer Moon, also by SC Gynne. If you are a history person or dig native american culture, it is a must. I think Ive read it 3 times. My favorite book. Fascinating.

larrymoe, I get what you are saying but saved may be a better word. With the concussion scare in America today, basketball on the gridiron is a way to preserve the sport in some peoples eyes. spacing and high speed collisions cause more of it than in the trenches ball

More and more those researching this topic point to the high volume of lower intensity, sub concussive impacts being the most dangerous factor.

i applied for and was offered a job once by hal mumme when he was the head coach at a texas high school.
i turned it down to take another job. spent some time with his coaching staff in their office while he was off doing something (long time ago, don't remember what it was). that was the deciding factor. i had no desire to be anywhere close to some of the guys he had working for him.
i'm not saying this as an indictment of him, because i don't know the man at all. he was ok in the interview. i was just used to being around decent humans, and i don't think some of those guys qualified.

I know several HCs like that. They themselves are nice guys, but the routinely employ so many douchers it makes you wonder if they themselves are actually an A-hole.
