Coaches - the one thing I haven't seen here are some "Trick Plays." Let's share some of our favorites - I'll get the ball rollin'. This link is to one of our favorites called the "TD Special." (It's a picture taken of the play in our playbook - i apologize for the mediocre quality). To give credit where it is due, the play came from "Collection of Successful Football Plays" Edition II 1990 and is credited to Coach Hart of Fernley, NV. The play goes as follows: 1. Line up in Twins 2. The QB calls shift and the TB splits the difference between the Z and OT. 3. The QB then flicks his heel and the FB motions opposite the now Trips side to about 5 yds from the sideline. 4. The routes are: X - Post, Z-Corner, TB- Out, Y-Fade, and FB-Fade. 5. QB reads from left to right - Does anyone go with the FB - if the CB does then the Y (TE) is open 90% of the time. If FB and TE are both covered, the TB on the out will be open as the X and Z have cleared the area. We have hit the X on the Post when the safety jumps the TE. This is a thing of beauty against a loaded front.

I played against a team in the 90's that ran several trick formations and plays.
One being the lateral pass where the bass is SKIPPED off the ground to the receiver. The ball is LIVE, and the Rec can advance it. The defense often stops thinking its an incomplete pass.
Another was on the goal-line; lining up in the Stacked I (3 backs). They ran a toss to the wideside... with each back optioning to the ones further out. Similar to Rugby.
We also ran a trick off a FG play. Our holder (QB) would tell one player to get off. As he was running to the sideline, the ball was snapped, and that player streaks down the field... hopefully catching the ball for a TD. We ran it... and yes.. it was 6 pts.

fly, that skip pass thing, we ran that in hs, it was fun to put in in practice
didn't work but it was a good time
this is a good thread to really show us some pictures of stuff as a lot of these trick plays can be so different than what we used to talking about

The thing I learned about trick plays and formations; through coaching and playing, was that they can take a considerable chunk of prep time away from the opposing defense. I know we spent a nice chunk of time going over stacked recievers, a stacked triple-I, diamond wr formations, and other more 'exotic' formations. A previous school i was at typically ran their goofy formation just before halftime of a big game. The other team then spends a good bit of half-time trying to figure out how to defend it - instead of adjusting to their base plays. I think when we play this year it might be a dose of their own medicine.

The old Hitch & Pitch is good. Also, we run the Jet Sweep quite a bunch and the Sweep Throwback to the QB has been good.

The play off the FG used to be called "who me". The holder tells the protector that he needs to get off the field and he yells "who me" and runs off. Kids love to practice it and it works sometimes and gives the opponents something to think about. Try and get a new trick play weekly. Makes practice click and just might work. Had lots of success with the old statue of liberty the past couple of years on subvarsity levels.

My freshman year we had a fake punt.
Simply we all lined up normally for a punt, "all 10 of us". The lone guy stands on the edge of his team's sideline like he is arguing with the coach... the coaching is chewing him out very good. As soon as the ball is snapped, the coach tells him "GO." He runs his ace and the punter just throws the ball with love on it.
We ran it in our last game of the season and none of the oppnents knew what him them. It's defiantly nice to have.

If the player was outside of the 9 yard mark when the ball was set for play, then that is illegal. All players have to come inside of that mark after the ball is set for play and then can line up anywhere.

We run the hideout play.. not as a punt fake.. but just in general.. we will have only 10 in the huddle.. send in 1 receiver to "sub" for the other.. and the one coming out just doesnt get off the field.. thats how we stay within the rules..

I like running trick plays, but I am on the defensive side. One drawback is that it seems you spend 80% of offensive practice on 1 play and 20 % on what your going to do most. The kids like them. Maybe, I could come up with a trick 'em defense.

If the player was outside of the 9 yard mark when the ball was set for play, then that is illegal. All players have to come inside of that mark after the ball is set for play and then can line up anywhere. What if you are running a no-huddle... the WR's aren't often with in 9 yards? Are they illegal... 'Sleeper' plays like this do often skirt the line... and you have to be careful of the rules - knowing the rules is a BIG part of the trick play - as is notifying the officials of what you're doing at WHY its legal. If a player is in the huddle... and then goes off after as if he's leaving the field of play... he's okay. Another way is to send the GF/Punt team in last minute... and leave someone behind out wide. I have also seen it down where a member of the punt/FG team simply doesn't go into the huddle. He lines up out wide near his sideline and stay there. Especially in a FG situation... he might be left uncovered.

Ahh the skip pass. We actually had a game in high school where we were trying to run a screen pass, but the quarterback skipped the ball off the ground and the RB caught it. Completely by accident, but our RB was smart and when the defense started going back to the huddle took off running down the sideline and scored. We put it in the playbook the next week, but never again did it work. We like to put in a new trick play/formation every week. Just one so it doesn't take as much time away from our normal preparation. Every Coach that faces us knows this so they have to prepare for anything. We might use it we might not. Some of my favorite concepts that have yet made it into a game was #1 the blooming onion( We line up in shotgun wishbone with 2 wide. The QB takes the snap and all the backs come together one player gets the ball and they all run in different directions. Worked great in practice. Tough to key anything. Have yet to run it in a game) #2 Stack Option ( Run Trips stack. Throw a quick pass to #2 and have #1 block Man on to inside. Option the outside defender with #3 running a pitch path to #2. Also we have ran the Jet sweep throwback, Jet sweep reverse pass.
