I'm looking for thoughts on the Zone running game (Inside & Outside Zone) as it relates to a feeder system at the 5th & 6th grade levels on up.
My questions are these:
1) Is it feasible to teach your younger levels (5th/6th) IZ/OZ if you are running it as your base at the V/JV level?
2) If yes, how would you implement it? (Water down)
3) If no, how far down can you teach IZ/OZ (7th/8th)?
Personally I've been a believer in having a very simple offense that stresses the fundamentals of football, regardless of the system at the upper levels, however, I've been discussing this topic with a coach from a rival school and he believes it is important to teach the base system to the youth programs. His program runs the Wing-T and he teaches his youth the Trap, Sweep, Belly and Counter w/ GOB rules.
Are the requisite skills and rules needed to run zone too difficult for the younger levels?
I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Zone stuff is good for underlevels. The basics of the blocking system make it so you can add so much stuff behind it. The stuff you put behind it would be the things to water down.
If you are going to zone up top, zone down below. Why run wing-t in the underlevels when you don't run it on varsity?

Any information that you would have would be greatly appreciated.
