1. How many captains do you have? 2. When do you select them? 3. What process do you use to select captains?

4. Two offense and two defense.
End of week 2 in the Spring.
Players elect them.

4 Total, doesn't matter offense or defense. And I pick them with input from the other coaches.

4 Captains. Players have to apply to be a captain. They must meet certain criteria to eligible. They give a short speech in front of the team. Each player votes for 4. The person voting writes their name at the top so I know who votes for who. We do voting after the first week of 2 a days.

All seniors get to be captain. Why go through all that when the players are going to follow who they like not necessarily who you like or who applies. It's calling heads or tales that's it

It's calling heads or tales that's it I think most would agree....There's many seniors every year that have no business being called captain. I've always seen being a captain as an honor.

I've never been associated with a program that picked just a certain number of "captains." I see what you're saying but I don't see the point in voting for or choosing captains. The kids pick their leaders regardless of who gets the title captain. You have leaders on your team and the captains go out for the coin toss.

Year 1: Started with 2 after camp, added one 3 weeks in, added one more the next week
Year 2: Had 2 permanent captains, named during/after 2adays. Sometimes sent two other seniors with them to coin toss, sometimes didn't, one time sent just one kid out there.

Usually two. When I was at a large school (1700+ enrollment) and had 45-50 players couple years we had four.
After first week of Pre-Season Practice (we didn't have Spring Practice).
Kids voted. They each had one vote, I had one more vote than number of players on team. Never had to exercise that option except to break a tie if necessary.

We have four every week. One is voted on by the players after practice on Wednesday, another is voted on by the coaches after practice on Wednesday along with a scout team player of the week, and the fourth is the special teams player of the week from the previous game.

We have 2 or 3 go out for the coin toss (smart "representatives"), plus the scout best player of the week. Otherwise, no captains. Leaders lead no matter who I would decide on. Usually one of the coin toss guys is a leader, though.

Anyone ever tried naming captains earlier in the year? Like around now, or maybe early Spring time?
Just thinking out loud here but there's no such thing as Leadership being taught anywhere at our school. The administration doesn't understand the importance of it for whatever reason. Then 6 miles north where I work at an elementary school that was just named to the Blue Ribbon List, chosen as the 3rd best elementary school in the country two years ago we have a program called, "Leader in Me."
These are two different school districts btw. Just thought maybe naming them earlier in the year may help with some off-season stuff. Thoughts?

We have 2 captains.
We select 4 captains at the beginning of offseason. Normally they are incoming seniors but sometimes they are incoming juniors with 2 years of varsity experience.
Then at the beginning of the season the team will pick 2 from the 4 by voting.

We have a process of four questions the players answer after the two weeks of fall camp. Then I select the 3-4 captains based on those answers.
Last year I had some poor leadership out of our senior class. Not just captains. I am looking at cutting back to 1-2 captains because I think the more we try and be inclusive of the top 3-4 selections the more watered down it gets. I mean when we break down the captains we had last year, there was really one who I would say was a great leader.

1. 4
2. Towards the end of Camp
3. We have a team vote privately. This can be dangerous so we enacted an "electoral college" among the coaching staff. We predetermine who we would like to see as captain, we then count up the votes and see who the kids picked and chances are they matched.
We generally pick the first 2 (one offense one defense) and the third is based on the ballots, the kids will never figure it out.
Finally there is a 4th rotational spot as an incentive.

We have 4.
At the end of the summer, the players vote for 2 of them.
After that, every week, the coaches select 2 players who we deem to be deserving. Either from the previous game or the week of practice.
