I am curious to see what posters believe is the ideal number of players for a Varsity High School football team. Maximum? Minimum? Breakdown by position? Do you keep players just to be bodies or keep them only if they can contribute by giving the starters a decent look on the scout team.

It mostly depends on the size of your school and the league you play in, but I would say 23-25 is minimum in my opinion to start the season. Depending on your league you may be able to get by with 20, but speaking from experience, I would NOT try to go any lower.

Frankly, the question has never come up with us. We've never been in a position where we've had to cut to get our numbers down. We don't cut except for disciplinary reasons or, on very rare occasions, if a kid's just so small and slow that we worry about his safety. Even for the latter, we'll suggest that he go and work with the kickers.

are head coach feels the more the merrier, he wants as many kds as possible to experience high school football, but he only makes one promise, he does not promise playin time. we had 80+ at condition for varsity, 65 for jv, 9th grade is split u into three jr highs so do not know those numbers. personnally i like the large numbers, we 2 platoon, alot of competition

The ideal situation would be three deep at every position. More players than that and you have trouble teaching/coaching anything without the help of position assistants.
At a large school this might be the case with players only learning to play one way and special teams, three deep on offense/three deep on defense.
My experience leads me to believe 35 well-coached, hard-working young men will get the job done. Unless the other team has 80+!

We are a middle of the pack 4A school in Louisiana.. We are middle of the pack because we only have around 800 students with the lowest in our class having around 600 and the biggest 1000..
Last season we had a new coach after an 0-10 season the year before.. We started the season with only 28 kids.. We were playing teams from the 2A level with close to double the amount we had..
Our freshmen team even had more players than the varsity..
Here is how we set up our team.. Freshmen, Varsity/JV.. We do not devide our JV and Varsity.. if you are not a senior and do not start you will play JV.. sometimes we make some of our varsity starters who are sophomores play JV.. We usually only bring around 13-14 players to a JV game.. Last year we had to have freshmen play after their game on JV just to make it competitive..
This year we will be starting the season with around 55 players.. I wouldnt mind having 80 out there.. but we can only do what we can with the ones we have.. we took those 28 kids last year and went 6-1 in the first 7 games before getting to the meat of our schedule and finishing 6-5 with a first round loss in the playoffs.. That still is a far cry from 0-10..

How does 21 sound to you guys? I thought we'd have at least 25, but after some no shows and 2 quitters the past 2 days we're down to this. Oh well, I think we can do it,be competitive, most in our league. Now it's all about getting in shape and coming together. One Heartbeat, One Mind.
