Watching the Bears game. Linebacker Sam Acho is #49. I'm assuming he wears that number because it is the inverse of the #94 he wore with the Cardinals. My question is, how can he play linebacker but not have to wear a number 50-59 or 90-99? Isn't that why Brian Bosworth had to change his number from 44 to 55 when he went to college?

There's no eligibility number rules for NFL defensive players (obv?) but they do mandate certain numbers for certain position for marketing purposes. I know 1-19 are reserved for QBs and kickers and things like that. I'm not sure why they do this but I guess it makes sure that the prettiest and most marketable players wear the prettiest jerseys with the prettiest numbers.

Vic beasley is olb and 44. Maybe number 44 was taken by someone else in you example? I know there are guidelines, don't know how strict they are though..
