Have you ever made a call that just made you cringe?? On first down we run the Jet from our own 45. We miss a block and the Jet man tries to cut back and gets tackled for a loss of 8. On 2nd down we get an illegal man down field call. I thought it was 10 yards and loss of down.. So no what I thought was 3rd down we sprint out and my slot gets a holding call about 6 yards in the back field. So here I am thinking we are facing 3rd and 40+ from about our 3. My QB also came up lame on that last play. So my other QB, who happens to be my punter is sent in. I tell him to quick kick it. So we quick kick it from an 8 yard shotgun from about 5 yards in our own endzone.. from an empty set.. He gets off a boomer and the ball rolls down to their 40. But, it was on 2nd down. I didnt know that the ineligible down field was not a loss of down. It would have been ever worse I guess if it would have been a shank or a block..

Who cares if it was 2nd down, thats a "good call" from that position on the field to me. The fact that is was 2nd down probably "sold it" to the other team even better. Sounds like the way things were going for the offense at that point in the game, this may even rise into the realm of the "greatest calls" of the season

Chin up... you might have saved yourself 2 points and in all seriousness, you learned a lesson (well, not so much a lesson, as learned some awareness) in a season that you already know doesn't really matter.

This is true. The one bright spot on the season is our punting game. It has gotten plenty of work. ;D

Tom Osborne used to have a story about when he only had two QBs and the backup was the punter. Sure enough it came down to the punter HAVING to play due to injury..... [/size]

I echo the great call sentiments. It surely helped you catch them off guard. On 2nd and 40 from your own 3 with the second string QB, what were your chances of doing better than giving them the ball at their own 40? Not that great. Excellent call IMO.

Things sometimes work out like that.
Had a situation once, where it was 3rd &1, team had a high tendency to run to TE side in this situation, so we call a zone run blitz to get ourselves moving to the TE and in an 8 man front. Our signal caller screws it up gives the wrong TE strength, and we end up slanting away from the TE, and sending the backside backer. Of course, the O was trying to break tendency, and they were running a naked...and we had movement to the naked side plus a free backer coming....and we look like geniuses....

The bad news is that it'll happen again. The good news is that it happens to all of us. May the opposing DC screw up his call at the same time that you screw up yours.

Airraider, Just remember that even a blind dog finds a bone every once in a while!! You came out smelling like a rose. Enjoy it and learn from it. We've all been there.

I was close to doing something similar 1st down - 2 yard run, facemask penalty. (DOWN OVER!) 2nd down (or so I thought) 2 yards 3rd Down (or so I thought) 1 yard So I send my punter in...tell him to kick it. They get into the huddle, and I make the kick signal, the kids just kinda look at me, and God bless them, they call the play. I take a peek at the down marker roughly 2 feet from where I am standing, with a big 3 on it...and call timeout

Once we recovered an onside kick, and our JV was driving down the field.........for some reason, I got very excited and started talking to our HC/special teams coordinator about getting our hand's-team ready in case we scored........... We said yeah, ok.............then he realized what I was saying and turned around and said, "we're going to kick off after we score"-----I caught alot of flack for that from out coaching staff Now I'm the idiot.

airraider you're the MAN! In politics they say if they are running you out of town, get out front and act like you are leading a parade in your honor. Did it change field position? Turn the game in your favor? It sounded like it worked. football coaches are copy cats, you might have started a trend. Quick kick on on 2nd down not 3rd down its least expected. GREAT STRATEGIC MOVE!!

Thanks guys, your stories are making me feel better about the time I sent the PAT team in after we scored on a safety.
