First, this isn't me trying to have some big rant against the officials. We won the game, and we won big. 37 points, actually. I just thought this story was kind of insane and kind of funny.
Last Friday night, we had an official who made a series of questionable calls.
Early 1st quarter, we punt. He gives one of those half fair catch signals. Our guys let up, and he takes off. One of our guys blows him up, after he had gone probably 15 yards and his team was still blocking. Flag on us, because he gave a fair catch signal. He was just running it out to keep his balance.
2nd quarter, we throw deep. Their DB just straight up shoves our WR right before the ball gets there. It's not that he didn't see it, but there was no flag because he was making a play on the ball.
2nd quarter, we wrap up the QB. As he's going down he gets the ball out. He hits the ground, flag. Not intentional grounding, but a late hit on the QB. Instead of 4th down, it's now 1st down.
The penalty ratio was 13 for us, 2 for them. Both were offsides. Several of the calls were fair.
In our previous 2 games combined, we had 9 total.
I was blown away at how obviously bad the officiating was. So, we checked on the names of the guys. The guy who was the obviously bad ref, his name stuck out. So I did some investigating.
He played football in high school, was a captain his senior year. At the school we were playing.
His business, was an "honor ring" level donor to the local football team. The school we were playing.
His nephew is the starting QB. Guess where!
His son is a starting WR. Guess where! And, the best part, was that his son the the returner who gave the fair catch signal and then took off.
Again, we won the game, and I know that bad calls are part of the game. More than anything, I wanted other people to hear this story, because it's kind of insane.
I'm sure he's going to officiate one of their games this week, too.

I would contact the league office, not so much about the bad calls, but about the conflict of interest. As Charles Barkley would say....that's turrible

Definitely a conflict of interest, he should not be reffing for that team. We have a teacher at our school who refs, and he isnt allowed to cover our games. That has to just be an oversight on the part of the league office.
Crazy story, tho. We'd probably have had coaches kicked out of that one...

Our JV game last Friday the opponents had #30 playing LG. Talked with the sideline ref about it. Twice. His response was "Coach, as long as he doesn't go out for a pass it's ok."

Wouldn't have a problem if their coach let ours know something like, "We don't have enough linemen's jerseys" or even "He might play FB too because we only have x amount of kids."

Numbering - I got no problem with that kind of deal, kids have to play all over and it's not varsity. But don't tell me that it's ok as long as he doesn't go for a pass, tell me that they don't have the numbers or something, I can deal with that. Telling me the pass thing makes me think you might not be up on things.

One would hope not but you have a point.

Football is hurting for officials across the nation. From youth leagues on up. Three of the officials from our game on Friday only have 2 games under their belt. One of them was on our sideline, and I do believe that his flag was sewn into his pocket.

I usually tell the refs in these situations something like "hey I have a guy on the line not wearing a lineman number" and they always are fine with it on JV. I don't try to get an advantage because of it either. It's just have a kid playing corner and center at the time. Ideal no, but it's what I have. Never had an issue with a coach or a ref about it.

We once had an opposing chain gang guy start a fight with our sideline. After they got him to leave, they let him back on the premises after the game and made it seem like we were being unreasonable.

Numbering requirements apply only to offensive players. Defensive players can wear any number regardless of position.
So your C-CB could wear number 52 for example. Or anything between 50-79, and that would avoid the rule conflict when he's on OL.

Yeah. Since it was never an issue and he started helping on the line after that I just never went to flip the jerseys. Plus he would swim in a bigger one. Great kid though

Many, many years ago, during a preseason scrimmage, we get flagged for an ineligible receiver downfield. He was wayyyy down the field. He was a tackle. We pulled the kid off to the sideline to find out what he was thinking (sometimes you really don't want to know), and he said: "Coach called 66 pass, that's my number! So I went out. Oh, thit, I'm 69 !" We used numbered pass routes at the time…………..

The same crew last Friday worked our varsity game, different positions but same officials. They missed a sprint pass where our OG was as deep as the 10-yard out route. Nobody saw it until we looked at video this weekend. And he was chasing a LB in front of a ref who was looking past him at the play on the sideline.
