We won our game last night, 41-0. The players were excited, they played so well, it was really great to see. The defense was swarming, 5, 6, 7 players in on each tackle, just flying around. The sophomore QB ran a 67 TD on his first varsity carry, called back by his brother making a silly block 20 yards behind the TD. Got his first passing TD, a 53 yard bomb that hit the receiver in stride for the TD. Everything was really good.
This morning I get the news that a son of one of my coaches died in a car wreck last night. He graduated in 2014, played football here, the family is really well known for being in the local Ag scene, on the local fair board, great kids. The entire family are hardworking, honest, everything you would want as a neighbor and a friend. Mom was just selected earlier this week as a liver donor for a baby of a family they know. Dad has coached youth football and now high school, 4H, FFA, local boards, just a great guy, loves life.
I coached his youngest son the past couple of years, the dad was on my staff last year and is my defensive coordinator, the guy put together the defense that did so well last night. The word is getting out this morning, coaches are calling each other trying to figure out what we can do, a lot of really good suggestions about wearing black jerseys, we're purple, for the rest of our home games and then using them for homecoming each year. T-shirts, decals on the helmets, etc.
I've lost my parents, lost friends, gone through losses that my friends have had, but I could not comprehend the sudden loss of one of my children.
