I have never had this problem. Our numbers were huge this year, and I've got 48 players on my MS squad with only 44 jerseys. Our school requires us to have tryouts, which I did during the summer. Our district got rezoned this year, so we had to have a second tryout this week for new enrollments. There were 4 kids that I could absolutely not turn away, so I kept them.
I'm at a middle school, and these 4 new kids will absolutely have a better shot at seeing the field than some of my other kids. Thing is, we have already chosen jersey numbers and had our jamboree. Those kids are pumped. Any of them would be crushed if I took their jersey away from them. How do I handle this situation? What would you guys do? Old jerseys are not option here.

There are two options...#1 is order more jerseys (which I really think is the only option in this situation). Option #2 is to make the kids earn their jerseys each week at practice. If you miss a practice, someone else gets your number that week. If you act like a clown in class, someone else gets your jersey that week. It possible you'll get a lot of backlash with option #2, which is why I'd go with #1.

I would say order more jerseys. However if this is not an option because of budget or other reasons then wear practice jerseys. Heck its middle school. Around here most officials don't even worry about jersey numbers as it relates to position.

Ordering more jerseys won't be an option for us this year...we just got new helmets so that left our budget a little low. I like the earn your jersey idea, but I see how it could have some backlash.

Get 6XL tshirts of the appropriate colour and put numbers on with a sharpie or fabric paint.

You have 48 kids on the team and you are short 4 jerseys? I would GUARANTEE that among those other parents, you could raise the money to get a couple extra jerseys for those 4 kids. You can get a decent MS-quality jersey for about $45. So, you need to raise about $200. With that many families, that should not be a problem. And if that isn't an option, you need to go to the AD or principal and tell them they need to get those 4 kids a jersey. And if they aren't going to get them a jersey, then they need to tell those kids and their parents why they won't be getting a jersey. Keeping a kid off the team simply because you can't find them a jersey is just not an option, IMO.

Umm...I would assume out of 48 kids you'll have 4 injuries. Sucks but if buying new jerseys isn't affordable don't let the injured kids wear their jerseys. Ruthless I know..

I worked for a guy in baseball that used to only keep kids based on the number of jerseys on the JV team. We had 15 jerseys so we only kept 15 kids. Inevitably, kids would get injured or quit and we had cut a kid that could have contributed or developed into a contributor. The craziest thing of all was one year a kid didn't turn a jersey in so I, as a smartasss, said I guess next year there will only be 14 jv guys. And he said "yep one less parent to complain."
It was really nuts. If kids are going to work hard and potentially develop into a contributor to the program then I am doing everything I can to keep them around.
In the OP situation if I absolutely couldn't get new jerseys I would have them earn them. If everything was absolutely equal then I would put subs on a jersey rotation and one would dress one week and one would dress the following week.
Another option is you may be able to ask for help from the varsity program. Let the head coach know that you think these guys can help the program down the road and they should be part of the program. He may be able to buy the 4 extra jerseys. Or if that doesn't work out he may have an old set of jerseys you could use as a whole set or even if he had 4 extra jerseys that were the same color as yours, like someone else mentioned most MS officials won't care if the jerseys don't match as long as they are same color.
Good luck, that would be a crappy situation.

I would ask the HS (as long as you are the same color). Use this as an example not to throw old jerseys away. We have had this problem in the past and we would just throw a kid in the old jersey.

i would say order some practice jerseys in your home and away colors. If money is a huge issue do a gofundme (as much as I hate those), get on social media, contact your local media and find a way to get at least practice jerseys for those kids. No way should you have to cut kids or make them earn a jersey in MS football. We need to find ways to keep as many players as possible interested in our game with the way our society is now.

I had this problem many years ago at a Title 1 school, very low income. I told the parents and faculty the situation. We needed $300 for 6 jerseys. We raised the money in less than an hour.

I can't believe that school administration would force you to cut kids rather than spending money to equip them.
How can they justify denying kids participation because of money?
Do you know any BOE members?
One HS I coached at we typically had around 120 kids 9-12 get equipment. My last year - ironically year district instituted "Pay to Play" - we had 147 come out.
School had to spend $3000 for more equipment, sure weren't going to turn kids away.

We get zero funding from the school. Athletics are entirely self-funded, so it's based on fundraisers and gate money.
I will ask our high school coach. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the tips, guys.

I just don't see how you can't raise money to get 4 more jerseys if you emailed out to the parents explaining the situation.
