Hey coaches,
OK I know I am on here alot, but I have alot of questions so bare with me.
I am really having trouble with the X's and o's, terminology, and all the technical aspects of football. I look at the other threads on here, but most of the time I am so lost that even if I wanted to ask a question I wouldn't know what to ask. I try to go on the white board, but no one ever seems to be there when I get there. I am a full time college student and a stay at home dad with my three year old. On most days I wake up with my son at about 7:30 and turn the TV on to ESPNU, CSTV or I watch one of the many games I taped. I spend alot of time on this site to. Usually from about 7:30am to about 4:00am (I really do not sleep much) I spend watching, reading, or thinking about football. I will attend clinics this year and sit down with some of the High School coaches to learn, but once again I have more time for football then most do. What can I do to learn as much as I can as far as the x's and o's on my time not someone else's?
Just to let you guys know how much of an idiot I am I have no clue what a 3-tech is, veer, and much much more.

You can't start out knowing everything and oddly enough the more that you learn, the more that you realize how little you know. A good basic book to start out with is "Coaching Football Successfully" by Bob Reade.
Never be afraid to ask someone what they mean when they are explaining the X's & O's, as coaches are teachers and like to share their knowledge as a general rule. I've been involved with football since 1984 (the last 15 years as a coach) and I'm still learning a lot of new information every year.

As for the 3 tech question, draw up an offensive line, now head up on the center is a 0 techinque. Now go into the game and you have a 1 tech, go head up on the guards and you have a 2 tech, in the guard tackle gap is a 3 tech, and so on going out even gaps head up, odd gaps between lineman

Thanks Yash. That 3 tech has been bugging me fore ever. kboyed, Thanks for the recommendation. Right now I am reading "Coaching Football for Dummies" and a book just called "Coaching Football" written by Tom Flores and Bob O'Connor. Any one read these?

The tom flores and bob o'connor book is not bad, but the Bob Reade book is a great book for begining coaches. i would suggest starting there.

Thanks I will get it tomorrow, well today its 2:35 am here. Any other suggestions If you ever have a question about a term used in a post and don't want to advertise that fact, just PM the author and ask him if he'd mind explaining it to you -- most of the coaches on here will be more than happy to...meanwhile, see if this helps at all: savefile.com/files/33719...and feel free to keep those questions coming, since that's the fastest way to learn. You can post, PM, or e-mail...

I do recommend that you spend some time PM ing some coaches, tedseay, huey, tog, etc to get some specifics, heck you can pm me if need be....just dont be afraid to ask.

To echo all of this, NEVER be afraid to ask terminology. There was a great thread that originated a long time ago teasing coaches who use "coach-speak" or "clinic-speak" when discussing football with others. As you will find out, some terms tend to be universal, but other terms are very team specific. Just surrounding yourself by the game will help you determine which are universal (veer and 3 tech are pretty universal) and which are team /system specific. If there is a coach who answers your question using these specific terms, ask him what does he mean. There is no shame in asking a coach to clarify what "Well, here we Cowboy over and that puts the Fred in Shoot, while the Anchor Eagles and the Longstick contains"
