How should I handle a group of community members who do not want the school district I teach in to renew my contract?
Some of their points are: Hitting in practice, play selection, and working with the youth program.
My response: Injuries have limited our ability to run full contact practices, I believe in our guys and system, and I helped when I could but still had a varsity program to worry about.

Wow - that's sounds rough, coach?

I wouldn't worry about the community members. I'd find out how the school administration feels. And if they are the kind that gets pushed around by the community then your better off finding someplace new. Trust me, I know from experience.

school board started to seem like they were on my side, but have since changed. our superintendent seems to be very wishy-washy on the whole topic along with our high school principal. the only one who seems to be on my side is my eight grade coach who is also our middle school principal as far as administration goes. what a kick in the groin

I have to agree with smalls. Unfortunately admin does not always have the strongest of backbones. Do the best you can everyday and focus on what is best for the team. The rest will take care of itself. This happened to a friend mine last year that had won 80% of his games.

coach,
If your admin is going to fold because of community pressure you are better off leaving. I did the same thing 5 years ago. The community complaned about saturday weights and film, admin told me I couldn't do it anymore. Community complaned that we were a oneback offense and the admin wanted me to put in either the wishbone or stacked I and run option because thats what they used to run. (when I took the job they had not won a game in 2 years and only 4 wins in the previous 5, we won 4 games all 3 years I was there) I left and took an OC job at another school in the same conference. Best move I ever made.

just my 2 cents,
is this a formal group, which intends to bring forth a case for your nonrenewal or is it a group of people who have said things?
Personally, I would contact a out of town lawyer. if people are saying things, you might be able to shut them up with a lawyer.
people are responsible for what they say and do.
there was a basketball coach in the same situation in my state. the people were very nasty to him. lets just say they all ended up having to pay the coach a settlement for what they said about him.

Coachs,
Make sure you know where the administration stands in the whole situation. If they are fully behind you they will tell the community members to go and take a hike. The community members will go and bark up some other tree. If the administration is entertaining these community members arguments they either have no spines or they are not supporting you either. In either case, it is time to move on.

found out some information about what is going on:
high school principal is thought to have brought in a new teacher who has head coaching experience, I don't trust him anymore.
super seems to be on my side and brought up contract language that keeps me hired if I so choose.
community members are trying to stir the pot and in the past other community members have actually influenced enough people to get others fired or so that they decide not to come back.
my choice right now is to fight and keep my job. Opinions?

3 years ago our HC was fired because some influential people in the community met with the superintendent. The coach called his NCAE rep and they paid for a bulldog lawyer. To make a long story short, the school board voted to re-instate the coach and a month later asked the superintendent to resign.
This HC had the full support of all 10 staff members and just about every teacher in the district. Without this support I don't think the school board would have given his job back.
If you don't have a ton of support, I'd pack my bags because our old coach had a tough fight even with great support.
