Do any of your programs charge an athletic or participation fee to play football?

Our school district charges $75 for busses, trainers, facilities, etc.
Our program charges for a spirit pack that the kids can get for free through fund raising goals (selling ads, discount cards, shirts, etc.)

Ours is close to $100. Free and reduced lunch kids have it waived. We might be one of the only programs in the area that does this, or so I have been told. We are a very tight fisted district when it comes to spending money so we try to get the players to pay for as much as we can.

The majority of Interscholastic programs in our state charge "Participation Fees" - otherwise known as "Pay to Play" - not just for Football but all sports.
I just hate it, for two reasons:
First, usually the kids that need being in a school-sponsored activity most are the ones that can least afford to pay fees .
Secondly, as a school district, if you believe in the values of Extracurricular activities - why wouldn't you fund them?!

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it said "Athletic Feces."
I'll get back to my beer now.

We have a participation fee ($200). This fee is for any activity that has a paid coach or advisor. Once a family pays this fee, the child can participate in as many activities as he desires.

We have a 125 fee that covers their cost to go to camp, and some pretty good apparel. If a kid can't afford it, genuinely can't afford it, we have a few business sponsors who can cover the costs.
I really wish we didn't have to charge, but our budget is beyond tight. And we have so many kids who I know that amount of money is a lot for them and their family.

Meanwhile where I am in Canada the average football fee is $250 per season.

We charge 75.00 and were are in the a similar situation where I believe their students who can't afford and do not participate. The problem with our fee is that is for athletics only, so clubs and our musical do not have to pay. Worst part about is that the money they raise from the fee does not even go back into athletics

Our district is odd in that there is a pay to participate fee that varies by sport, for football it is $75. On top of that, each athletic program must be self funded outside of items such as shoulder pads, helmets, refs, and in season bussing. I walked in to a situation that had the kids paying an additional $360 in the form of "booster fees" (these are non mandatory but heavily pushed by the booster club). These costs could be defrayed by selling certain things such as cards or sponsorships. My first year I looked at it and cut it immediately by $100, then this year cut it more.
I have already went through the budget and informed the booster club that we will cut it completely to $0 next year because I do not believe kids should have to pay to play a sport in school. I will just need to up our other fundraiser activities and cut any non necessary purchases which will be easy since we spent the first year building up the things that matter ex weight room and sled instead of buying luxury items that were purchased in the past. While I coach in an extremely wealthy district (which makes it even more interesting that there are these fees) I am not comfortable with nor do I expect anyone to pay for their kid to play a sport. To the best of my knowledge we will be the only sport at the school that will not charge a booster fee when we cut it completely, some word it differently but it's still there. I'm just done with it and believe sports should be a priority and not a burden.

Ours is $100 at a private school. Most kids can make payment arrangements. We've also been known to find some mysterious benefactors.

heck, my first school I coached at out of college had a activity fee, I believe it was 80 bucks but that covered all sports, kids also had to buy their own jerseys, I had some kids with names on the back and some didn't, this was back in 91/92 season, so pay to play has been around a long time, because they were doing it before I got there

We charge $100 no matter the sport, and there is a family cap. Fees can also be reduced or waived based on if a family qualifies for free/reduced lunch program. I don't know of a school that doesn't have activity fees.

I'm in California, not allowed to charge per the ACLU!! Sure, some programs try to charge for their spirit pack, but even those, you can't make mandatory, and if a player wants the shirts and shorts that everyone else is wearing, you have to supply it to them!

We charge $50 for camp but this money goes directly back to the kids as we use it for clothing and other essentials. Once school starts, kids pay $75 for the first sport, $50 for the second, and the third is free. If a kid can't pay the school will help the student out.

Our school district charges $120. I hate it for all the reasons above as well as for the entitlement factor it brings. "We paid for Sammy to play. Why isn't he playing?" Complaints went up dramatically the year the fee came on line.

I can't believe the numbers I am reading! God bless that you can make it work.
At my school I believe it is $850!!!
We got it down from $1000 because we are not going away for camp.
I coach at a Catholic Highschool in Staten Island, New York
it's every, lawyer, cop, firefighter, accountant, longshoreman, and "private sanitation" son... they have the money to burn. lol

Also in CA, no pay-to-play. At a previous school each player family was asked for a donation of $325 per football player. This was a donation and we coaches never knew who did or did not donate. Each player had to get cleared through the office folks, they did the grades and fees and eligibility and donation, and brought their 'yellow ticket of freedom' to the HC. No tickee, no playee. So the coaching staff never knew who was in which financial situation so it could not be a consideration for playing time.
Per the interpretation of the policies by my current AD, if something is required, a spirit pack, knee pads, etc., the team does have to provide it, but only 1 time. After that, it is up to the player to replace/upgrade it. So when we went to no practice pants last year we had to issue practice/volleyball knee pads, girdle, shorts, and t-shirt. We did that for every player in the program, 80 total sets. This year, we do that only for the new players, the previous players already have it and were presented with a team store as an opportunity to replace their items. Some did, some didn't. We ordered 40 sets and will 'bank' the extras.
Our district funds $5k for helmet & shoulder pad reconditioning. They also cover transportation, referee fees, all that stuff. But anything for the team, helmets, jerseys, tape, that's on the team to fund raise. We as a team are on track for $12-14k this year and we have a football booster club as well.

That is crazy the amount of items the team needs to provide for the players. At my school we could never be able to raise that kind of money

Not on the South Shore of Staten Island We have 3 former college coaches on our staff and all three have agreed they have never seen this many kids purchase their OWN stuff.
