Consider this scenario; the superintendent tells you that he wants to hire you, pending Board of Education approval. The Board votes to hire you 4-1 or 5-1. Would you reject the job because you know you already have someone that didn't want you or take the job believing that your job performance would eventually change the board member's mind? What do you think you would do?

you cannot worry about one person. A good supt. controls the board and in this case it looks like the one person is clearly in the minority. If you coach long enough you will find out that there will be plenty of other people that do not agree with everything you do. Just focus on what you need to do and work with the people that are on your side. Our job is to worry about the kids and make sure they are becoming the best student/athlete they can be by providing a positive and great experience.

Sometimes I have seen board members vote a proposal down not because they are against it in principal but how the proposal was written or approved.
Take the job.

I would take the job, you can wait forever for the perfect scenario to fall into place and never have it happen. If the only negative with this job is that 1 board member is against you (which probably isn't actually the reason they voted that way) you will be fine.

Take it. That person may have had their heart set on their cousin in law taking the job and would've voted against the love child of Vince Lombardi and Don Shula.......don't worry, just win baby, and come contract renewal time, you'll get the support you want.

I would seek out that one person and try to find common ground.
however you cannot worry about what people think about you in the coaching profession. A wise old coach tole me once, you make 1 to2 people who are against you every year you coach. so over 20 yrs, you can have 20 to40 people who do not like you in the community. it is often why you see coaches withh 30 yrs get fired for having a bad year or two.

Take the job- you're never gonna make everyone happy, so don't even worry about that one person. If only one person is unhappy with you at any given time condsider yourself blessed..;-)

Take the job. I got my teaching job at my last school by a 5-1. Guy voted against me because he didn't see it on the agenda before the day of the meeting and was POd he didn't get to personally see me before they hired me.
Really stupid thing was he sat in on my interview because he used to be the department chair in the department I was going to work in. But he still voted no.

Take the job and don't worry about the one who voted against you. With the Supt. and the majority of the board on your side you need to hit the ground running and start building a winner. The kids need your full attention - don't lose sleep over one person. How many things in life are a unanimous decision anyway? I know for a fact that 2 of my best jobs ever that I was the 2nd choice. You just never know.

Take the job. A lot of guys have been fired a couple of years after being hired unanimously. Plus, are all of your coaching decisions approved unanimously in staff meetings? If so you have us beat. Once a decision is made, though, we all work 100% to get it done. The same thing could happen here because he may have had some reason to vote against you but he probably wants the program to be successful.

Where I am (and really any school I've been at) if the board unanimously agrees with me... then I am doing something horribly wrong. Every board seems to have a knucklehead or two. 4-2 votes are perfect for me here... because we have 2 yahoos on the board.

Well, boys, just as I had anticipated, tonight's vote by the Board was split. I am taking the job, just as each of you had advised and because it feels like the right thing to do. Thanks again for all your input.
