Coaches, I've taken over as the head coach at a boarding school. I've served as the OC for the last three years, so Im familar with the school climate. I'd like to start a discussion on the challanges you've faced, how you've over come them, etc. For starters, we are a military school. That provides challanges in itself. Second, our state (MO) allows 25 contact days during the summer. I have 0 because my players are all over the world (literally, Mexico, China to name a few). This year we start fall practice on 8/1. School starts 8/22. Our first game is 8/19. Several kids wont show up till 8/21, despite me telling them if they come out 8/22, they'll miss half the season (first game, plus 14 practices per state rules). What are some things you've done to combat these issues? What are some other problems you've had?

Can you take your contact days in June at the end of the school year before they leave?

Congrats on the new gig. With as much technology as there is nowadays my suggestion would be to use a program that allows you to share playbook stuff with them prior to them getting back for the fall. At least they can be somewhat prepared for the season mentally.
Another thing you may try doing is to incorporate some team building via skype or a video conferencing app. I'm sure it would be tough to get everyone all on at the same time but this would be a fantastic way for them to get to know each other prior to returning to school.
If they are military kids surely they'll be in great shape. They may not be in football shape but if they are sitting out half the season they should have plenty of time.
Good Luck!

sorry, you get twenty five contact days in the summer, that counts camps, seven on seven, does not count weights, you have to have 14 practices in before you can play in a game, plus there is a dead weak in the summer where all sports for that school can not have anything going on

Didn't MO drop it down to 20 contact days?

Gibbs72 is right. Missouri is now only 20 contact days during the summer. Also, it's not a one-for-one count to get to 20 days. Any time you have full-contact practice or camp with another team, one day counts for 3 days against your 20 total days.

All athletes that were at the school this past year are expected to report the opening day of camp. You are in a better situation than us. Camp can begin on 1 Aug. Admin wont let us on campus until 10 Aug. They didnt want us back until 17 Aug with our first game on 26 Aug. We are looking into getting onto a military to hold the first week of camp there. Mostly conditioning and team building exercises. It helps that we are a military boarding school.

20 days, 25, 50, doesnt matter, I don't get any lol. I hear the, "they are in a military school", they'll be in shape. You'd think, right? After spending 9 months of doing PT, they lay around all summer, playing video games and eating candy. I've tried to get them to stay for football camp, but after being away from home for 9 months, the caps are still in the air (required to attend graduation), and half of them are in the car to go home.
