I would only go in with at most two. I don't like them. I think they take time away from the rest of the offense, but some coaches live and die by them. Bill Walsh always said you had to run your trick plays (specials) in the first half or you wouldn't get a chance to run them. He would even include tricks in his list of "Openers." I think if you are going to run them, they have to be a part of the offense. They have to be just another play that you practice week in and week out. Michigan in the late 90s ran a reverse and a double reverse consistently week in and week out. I think that is the way you have to do it.

we have 1 or 2 "trick 'ems" each week.
these may consist of: * a reverse * a hitch & pitch * a shift to a weird formation / motion / play * toss pass or reverse pass
have other things called "home runs" each week. usually have 4 or 5 of these. consist of: * stop & go's or out & ups * throwbacks (off sprintout or boot) * rail type routes off of a wide receiver screen * heavy/jumbo run set with 1 receiver (sometimes 2) where we are hard-selling run then go pap post or go * empty set

depends on the opponent from scouting and what we think they may give us. also depends on how we are playing and what they are doing against us. as a base rule we try to go home run or vertical at least once a quarter....usually end up taking about 6 'shots' per game. but, currently we are lower than 6 most games because of we are in so much of an infancy stage with our offense right now, especially the passing aspect of it.

how many gadget or trick plays do you go into each game with? how often do you try and call them? when do you try and call them? Out of a multi-I set we use the reverse, pitch pass, counter from the wing since we are a heavy pitch team, and screens and bubbles. try to use them every game atleast once. We avoid using them only on long yardage situations, we will come out on first down and start the game or new drive with them, counter comes after a heavy dose of pitch and lead. Bubble and screens come on at any time we think they are pressing or blitzing.

They ain't trick plays if you work on them. I will run reverses and suckers 3-4 times a game if they work. We have a "big play" period every wednesday where at the end of practice after team we run all of our big plays (rev, dbl pass, suckers, etc) for 10-15 mins. The kids get a kick out of it and we work our "trick" plays hard every week.
