If you had to choose between JV Head Coach and a Varsity Coordinator position which would you choose and why?
Do you think one has an advantage over the other for a future Varsity Head Coach position?

I think they are both very important positions, but my ego would probably cause me to choose a varsity coordinator position over jv head coach. I don't know that either one provides a big advantage over the other for a future head coaching position.

i don't know how everyone's system is set up. but, with the systems in our state, the jv head coach is "under" the varsity coordinator. i'm not sure a guy could get a head coaching job from the jv staff unless he had already previously done some varsity coaching or prior hc job.

Coordinator, no doubt. JV parents can be 10x the headache that Varsity ones will be. I do like JV because you can call a few things you normally wouldn't, but coordinator is still the way to go.

I have been both. Honestly the head JV coach might have prepared me more the Varsity Head job. I had a ton of fun coaching JV we played at 9:00 Saturday morning. We ran the team just like a varsity team with film, scouting reports, etc. I was able to experiment and try things I would never attempt on the varsity. We had a complete offensive team and defensive team which was unheard of at the school. I really saw mid level kids really improve being the starter and gets most of the reps. We had some pretty good teams, it was nice to take out your stareting fullback and put in your 2nd and 3rd string Fullback who were the starting LB's on defense and offense was better. But after a few years as JV coach I was ready to return to the varsity. But it really was fun and a great learning experience.

JV is a great place to learn the ropes and get experience taking care of things such as parents, laundry, equipment...it's experience that forms a good HC. Nevertheless, I would take the Varsity spot and never think twice about it.

Thursday games is where it all begins. The JV coach must be in-tune with the varsity set-up so that when the JV players make Varsity the Staff does not have to waste usless time going over things that the JV coaching staff should have.
