There have been several questions and statements about how much time a coach spends working on this or that.
I think time is relative to other factors. A very big factor is how many players do you have out for football; how many at a particular position. Having a 10 minute time segment for a position that has 10 players may not be enough time, but is too much for a position that has only 2. As an example, we have about 18 players on our JV right now, but 30 on the varsity, and 36 freshmen. It takes less time to get the same # of reps. in with the JV than it does the other 2 teams. With 18/19 players your entire practice schedule has to be looked at in comparison to 30/36 players. It's hard to do much 7-7 when you have 5 defensive backs and 3
lbers. Fatigue becomes a greater concern as well. Especially right now with 98/98 temp./humidity. The coaches have to become players as well. You guys who coach at the big high schools and colleges don't have those problems or concerns.
Another factor to consider is how long you have for the total practice. Texas has an 8 hour rule for each week, even though most people ignore it. Meaning form Mon.-Thurs. practice and partication can only be a total of 8 hours. I also know of schools where school policy mandates that practices cannot last past a certain time.
Most of the time, when we are faced with time problem and we have to decide between indy work or group, we will opt for group.
Just some food for thought about "time".
