Just curious - how does it work down south with kids in a spring sport and spring football practice. Do you hold kids accountable for missing etc.? For those of us up north how does this effect your after school programs? I loose about 60% of our winter workout warriors and only gain 3 winter sport kids.

I'm up north and it doesn't effect our numbers. I am working closely with the track and baseball coach this year to make sure kids get a chance to lift. These coaches have been very supportive. You just have to be creative in your scheduling and get a little help from the other coaches.

When I went to school in Florida. (Pensacola) I played football and ran track. We had weight training classes as a curriculum. Varsity players had weight training last period. So we didn't miss any weight lifting or speed/agility work.
Not sure if they still do it this way now.

I'd rather have kids out for track anyways. But, we are in a situation where our track practice doesn't start until 4pm--45 minutes after school gets out. So I have the chance to grab track kids to get a modified lift in before practice.
I lose the baseball kids, but there are only a few and they can always lift in the mornings.

Work around the other sport schedules; make it clear that you're making their season a priority over your lifting schedule.

Here our a few of our football coaches coach track so they get the kids on the weightroom. The problems we have are with the baseball players because they do not lift during the season, coach doesn't believe in it. Also the basketball players do not lift because the coach says it will mess up their shot.

We have two periods of football wt. training classes. This gets most of our kids. We have 2 varsity players not in the class, and a handful of JV kids who schedules didnt fit. They come after school and lift. If they are playing a spring sport, we have to just suck it up and they miss out until the season ends. However, its not a major problem as most of our kids are in one of the two classes
