Louisiana just passed a sales tax measure...
starting immediately, until July 1st all sporting events will be subject to 5% sales tax.
After July 1st it moves to 3%.
Does any other states do this?
Financially this is not a killer, but the premise really opens the door to unwanted insertion by our government.

Seems like schools would get non profit status. I would just under report ticket sales, seems like it would be difficult to track and enforce.

I know if we did this in KY it would be a royal pita. The question is do the schools up the cost of the ticket or do they keep the ticket price the same and take the sales tax out of the ticket price.

It would, but I just find it hard to see how they would enforce it. I probably wouldn't cheat it, but I can say many would.
And I think this one gets passed on directly to the consumer. Though it would create a strange circle of money since a lot of schools get money from the state for their operations. Not to mention in Ohio it would be crappy since a lot of schools are already doing pay for play.

One guy on the radio today said they talked about posting a sign that said $7 admission or $6 donation to enter...
We have always been non-profit...
The budget hole we are in right now has caused them to tax so many things that were previously tax exempt.
We personally are going to just up our ticket prices by .50 for regular season games.

I think they are currently charging $6... It sounded like he felt like they could pay the $7 if they wanted, but most would just give the "donation" instead of paying the extra dollar. I think one of the biggest issues is the extra accounting being added to an already busy book keeper at the schools. I know our lady is always busy when I need something... I hate to bother her... so this will just add to that. The guy in the interview is from a school that has a well established baseball team with a great fan base. If you kick the admission up to accommodate for the tax, they will probably gladly pay it. My program on the other hand struggle some nights to pay the officials. We have had some good gates this year based on who we played. But, that extra dollar may make some people decide to stay at home out of principle.

I think they did 5% for the remainder of this year to try to recoup some money that they are not getting with the 3% based on it only being 3 months from this year... I think 3% is the magic number... but they just decided to kick it up for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Good luck on it staying at 3%.

Good luck on it staying at 3%. This is supposedly just temporary until we can dig the state out... but we all know how that goes. They are also taxing college sporting events. They will make a good bit off of LSU games.

Some districts are already enacting hiring freezes in anticipation of an MFP hit.

I wonder how many schools are aware of this? I have heard of several districts getting together to determine whether or not they would raise ticket prices for the remainder of the year. Very little in the media about it for sure.

Wow! Truly a shame that we are having to tax a high school game. We are slowly making it where the average family will not be able to attend a game on a Friday night in Louisiana.
