Took the kids to see Grandmom this past week (8 hours in a vehicle with a wife and three kids under 8 was fun) and stopped in on 8 coaching friends along the way.
6 of the 8 friends run the spread and ALL 6 were full, blown coaching their offense with their skill guys when I stopped by.
The 2 that run the I or the Dead T were just doing normal summer weights and running with their kids.
Why do spread guys seem to "cheat" more than others in Texas?

I have no problem with that. But having the staff coaching concepts and recognition on the field is a little over the line imo.

what if you send them home with game clips? playbooks?
where do you draw the line?
If the kids come out, you can't fault the coaches for giving them stimuli.....but most kids don't want to practice handoffs for an hour....they WILL spend 2 hours on their own catching & throwing the ball.
it is what it is.

What are the rules for summer contact? In Illinois, we get 25 days to hold practices during the summer. Many, if not most schools will even pad up during these days and it is perfectly legal (provided you are not scrimmaging other teams).
What a lot of schools here do is hold illegal spring practices before summer. They advertise these as "open gyms" or "speed, agility, and quickness" sessions, but, in reality, they are often running pass routes and coaching up the kids well before the summer contact period begins.

in nor cal they have gotten rid of all rules, so many teams were cheating that our section got rid of summer rules, in summer anything goes now, from last day of school until mid august when "conditioning week and double days" start. we can go full gear everyday if we want to

In Maryland you get zero days of practice from the day your season is over until the 1st official day of practice on Aug 15th. You can't chalk talk, watch video, play catch, or even wear school owned jerseys or use school owned balls for 7 on 7.
We are a complete joke as far as off-season work is concerned. So do most (not all) coaches "cheat"? Of course! How can you not cheat & still be ready.

One nice thing about hanging your hat on some type of passing attack; your QBs and WRs can rep it all summer long. Even if you've just got a QB and a couple WRs in the backyard- they can rep the attack a lot.
I wouldn't call it cheating; just one of the perks of running that specific attack.

I would think that a spread offense can get a lot done with receivers and qbs wheras a doublewing or run oriented offense has more of a need for a defense, live defenders , lineplay etc so they weren't on the field. We're a SBv and we do run the offense in shorts , thud speed 3 times a week. Perfectly legal here.

What several of you guys seem to be missing is this: The coaches are there running their offense. In Texas this is against the rules. If the kids want to do it, then that is great.
Tog is right when he says "kinda" means it depends on who you are though. lol
I knew this topic would get the spreadsters dander up.

Forget the practicing, I want to know how you got your wife to agree to stop and see EIGHT different coaching staffs? ? Is it different in Texas, do you exchange playbooks at the wedding instead of rings....LOL

There should be no "kinda" That is a B.S. answer (no offense tog) Cheating is Cheating. Period. If coaches contact is not allowed, then they are violating the rules, and should be reported.

i agree but the system is more complex than that
the people that would be reported are teflon so it won't do anything to you and if you did report people and it got back that you were the one that reported---that's even worse than getting caught
we just choose to follow the rules ourselves and have an ex player, or an old retired coach help out with the team

The others were all within 30 minutes of my mom's house, so I hit one each morning.....plus my wife is great about that kinda stuff.

I believe, in the great state of Virginia, that the person who is responsible for reporting illegal practices would be the AD. And since most of the ADs around here are basketball coaches, they don't have time to report violations during the summer because they've got practice.
All you can do is run a clean program, you can't change what other people do. You're preaching character and developing men to your kids, then you're cheating. Not the way I'd do it.
Congratulations on winning the wife lottery, gamedog

In Kansas we can work with 3 kids at a time. If you get the kids to come in by now, which they are they are running the offense without any coach there, it can pay off later. We are allowed a one week team camp but no helmets or pads. If you preach Character and all that good stuff like most coaches do how do some of you guys sleep that are coaching them up during the summers and spring. There is a certain coach in Kansas that has turned a program around and has one 3 or 4 titles in a row and I know he has kids in these "open gym" times in the morning during the winter practicing steps and handoffs. That is not a smear when it comes straight out of the guys mouth.
