Does anybody do this for a fundraising idea? I remember they used to do it for every home game at a school I was at around 1998. It always seemed like a big thing too. Each player and coach signed it.
I was thinking about doing the same thing with some GST balls that were a little older. Maybe charge $1 or $2 per ticket.

We've done that before. We did it by way of a silent auction. We also signed an older jersey as well. That was pretty good too. I would also take a rejected helmet, buff it out, and have the kids sign that as well. The helmet was the biggest seller.
I think raffle or auction work either way.

Maybe a mixture of both. No reason you can't get 2 footballs, 2 helmets, 2 jerseys: raffle off one of each and silent auction the others. The "money guys" will silent auction more likely. If you have a good computer/ graphic arts department, have them create pics of the field, logo, live action in games, etc and put them in big frames or those poster frames from Walmart. Add autographs from the seniors and you have another good raffle/ silent auction item.

It sounds like you are referring to auctioning at an event, or do you mean do this at a football game? Do you mean do the silent auction at the game? If you do, would you do that over multiple games, or just once?
I have some other fundraisers planned, and I was thinking this might be an added way to get money, but not seem like a burden of asking people to donate. So I thought by doing the signed football, or helmet/framed pictures (I like those ideas) it would be a simple concept.

I've seen it done both ways. I was part of a program that did a dinner and silent auction. The food service department catered the event for a small charge ($10 a plate, I think?). We had a large silent auction then had a couple larger items donated that were done as a normal auction. We did it in April, so it was kind of a reflect on the previous year/ kickoff the next year event.
I could see your having a different item or 2 for each home game that can go through a silent auction. May not make a ton of money, but maybe enough to pay for coaching shirts/ shoes, clinics, $$$ to visit a college staff, etc.

We do a large Crabfeed with our music program (school tradition thing, been going on for 25 years)
We have various auction prizes, one of them is a "football pack" Signed helmet, ball, shirts and shorts Just some general memorabilia ... Usually goes for 4-500 bucks
This year we also auctioned off a pack of our RB's stuff. His jersey, cleats, and a ball all signed by him ... It went for 1700 bucks Good deal because his jersey was ripped and we had to re order a new one anyway, the ball was flat/dead, and he runs through cleats every few weeks anyway
So all of the stuff was pretty much useless to the football team and our back in the future

We ordered several extra 21s each year to sell off as "authentic jerseys". Made a killing. Funny story, when Marcus was in school our equipment guy (that's all he did) would take Marcus jersey and wear it to the Carolina or Clemson each Saturday he'd go to. He was quite the popular fellow.

We did it at a place I was at a few years ago with a ball autographed by Peyton Manning. We sold tickets for $1 each in the stands at every home game and announced the winner at halftime of Senior Night. We made a couple thousand off it. It turned out that it was technically illegal in our state, though.
Never thought of doing that with an old ball signed by the team, but I like the idea.
