How many of you charge your youth kids to attend "youth camp" or charge your jr high and varsity athletes to attend "speed camp" or something similar?
I do not think I would charge my kids to do something that I want them to do so badly...just curious because I have heard of others doing this and charging 100 dollars for speed camp.... seems like a conflict of interest to me...
I intend to run clinics for my youth staff, jr high and middle school staffs..no charge at all. and same thing for the kids. no charge. I suppose its ok to have prizes and tee shirts and things of that nature so maybe a small "fee" to cover that stuff....any ideas?

we charge for our summer program, but it is very organized and not just open gym. It essentially pays for equipment purchases/replacement and coaches pay. It is less then a gym and much less then a personal trainer.

we run a 3 day 'camp' for our 8 - 13 year olds, like $25 buck a kid....they get instruction, t-shirt, popsciles.....yada yada.....
I think the parents look at it as cheap baby sitting.
We have strict regulations regarding having contact with our players in the off season, so unless you have a meeting called a "camp" or "clinic" it's not sanctioned here.

We charge kids $30 for a camp. I'm not sure where the money goes, although last year, our HC finally paid us for working the camp ($20 a day for 4 days).

We charge our kids for the speed/strength program in the summer. Three main reason: 1. It gives the players and their parents a reasons to make to every session (monetary motiviation) 2. Pays for equipment 3. Pays for the coaches time

Our JV and varsity camps do not pay for anything except the team camp we go to, $250.00, but that does not go to me or the school. Our elementary camp, 4 days after school $25.00 per. Tee shirts, prizes, snacks, and rests goes to football account. Middle school Camp is 4 evenings, $10 per, tee shirts.

IMHO,
You have to charge if its a Youth or Junior High Camp.
What you are providing has value. Our Junior Camp had about 200 kids last year at $65. 4 evenings 6:30 to 8:00.
Money went for coaches, tshirts, misc costs. I think some went toward the Booster fund. Teacher coaches deserve every additional dime they can get.
Free means what you are delivering isn't worth paying for. There's a kazillion of other trainers and camps getting in the pockets of parents. Coaches, especially teacher coaches, deserve to be paid.
Make sure in all your marketing and communications that scholarships are available. Make that really easy for parents and kids so they can show up already "marked" PAID. Kids who need scholarships don't need anyone else to know they are receiving them.

not sure about NM rules here, but in oregon most speed camps are put on by professionals from the universities or businesses that run speed camps for a living. Case in point, at Springfield the UofO speed camp was held at our stadium, in exchange for working at our house, out kids got private instruction at half price, and the group camp was also at half price. Thats the only legal way businesses can do it for tac purposes.

We do what we call "open field night". 3 times a week our coaching staff will get together with our players, players from our Pop Warner teams are invited as well as players from other High Schools are welcome to attend (but havent yet.) We go through "Football Basics" and conditioning. The kids get alot of reps at each positition. At the end of each session (the last 45 to 50 mins) we have a 2 hand touch scrimmage. We do not charge for these sessions. It gives us the chance to see what we have for that year as well as what we have comming up. We have had some great turnouts the last 2 years. We also go away to camp as a team. We charge the kids around $110.00 for three days at a camp we rent out. The camp also provides a staff to supply us with meals and a certified trainer. Last year we shared the camp with two other (lower division) teams. Their are facilities to swim, shower and hold skull sessions. All of the kids thought it was a great experience and learned a great deal as well as came together as a team.
