We are doing an end of season banquet. We will do the regular things like highlight video, awards, talk about position groups...but I was seeing if any of you guys did anything to make that night really special for each player and their families.

I had a positive experience in college where our coach let the seniors speak. I always tried to let that happen if I had the right group of kids.
One time I let the position coaches speak on their players. It was a riot. I didn't realize how closely the coaches watched their kids on and off the field. Good (clean) stories came from that night.

I always had Co-Captains speak.
Position coaches introduced-presented letters to their Senior players and also any Team awards their kids won.
The most special thing I did for players-parents was get them in and out in an hour and a half (including dinner).

I'm closest to blb on this one. My first 2 years here our banquet was us, volleyball, cheerleading, poms and something else I can't remember. Potluck dinner first, then each sport. Then we cooped for football and it was us, cheer and dance. This year it was just football since cheer and dance "season" wasn't over.
We have probably the driest banquet ever. I get up, thank people, introduce the kids by classes (I try to say as little about each kid as possible so it isn't obvious which ones drive me crazy), bring up the Leadership team kids, and then present our one special award of the night- the Bronco Award. Before this season we had given out 6 different kinds of "Most Valuable" awards. With a roster of 33 kids that's almost 1/5th of our team that would have been the most valuable. So, we gave out an award based on character, leadership, service, and other criteria determined by the leadership team. Then, we went home. About an hour total including the potluck.
No matter what you do, someone is going to leave pissed off. So, I figure, I might as well make it efficient.

My wife makes a powerpoint of each senior. Each player has 3-5 childhood pictures then a current day picture of the kid. The players joke and kid each other about thier kiddie pictures and parents love it. My wife puts some tear jerking music with it and its a big hit. Our booster club purchases the seniors jerseys and we lay them out in front of an 8x10 action pic of the player. For awards we actually let the team vote on them as soon as the season ends. Parents cant complain about who got what since the peers chose the superlatives.

We just had our banquet last week. We did the usual trophies and such, but I added some medallions for the seniors. These were custom made from QuickSilver mint in Ft. Bragg, CA. These cost $10 each because they discounted for us since we were a HS. Cost $150 to get the artwork and the die made. They are 1" in diameter and made of bronze. They drop hammer forge these things, found them at a crafts fair several years ago. Nothing great here, but it is something different. quicksilvermint.com/medallions/index.htmI'm new to the Dropbox operations so I hope this works. www.dropbox.com/sc/u3o5nkk2w314msw/AACiyjksCULJegWQOce49CXXa

I hate football banquets, I would love to see all Fall sports award assembly at school Last 2 periods of the day like they do with NHS or other awards.
The players should be recognized by the student body.

Our booster club purchases the seniors jerseys and we lay them out in front of an 8x10 action pic of the player. In theory I like giving jerseys in practice I don't. The amount it actually winds up costing you in the long run isn't worth it for what most kids throw in a box and maybe a few hang up in their man cave down the way. We did the action shot (which I think the kids really liked) and a few other things this year that didn't require us reordering 20 jerseys at $65 a pop...I know it's a booster club purchase but I consider the booster club a part of the program since that's who I go to with all program financial needs, other places I'd personally spend the money.

We do our football banquet the Wednesday before our last regular season game. It then becomes a pep rally rather than a funeral. Resistance at first, now everyone likes it. I also like getting it over with as I sort of hate the banquets anyway but know the parents love them.

Keep it short and brief. No one wants to hang around for three hours...or even two.
The buffet should be the most time consuming.

I coached at a large (1700+ enrollment) school where we had between 120-140 players in program 9-12 each year.
Never went over two hours.
Only way your situation happens is if HC lets JV and Freshmen coaches talk too much.

Heading to ours at 3 today. Last year's was 4+ hours.
I was the head jv coach in baseball. Our principal is our head baseball coach. He said to keep it short. I hate public speaking said don't worry this will be the quickest one you ever seen. I went up said "Thanks for being here today and supporting these young men all season. Players when your name is called grab your award and shake our hands because we appreciate you and all you have given to the team. (Read their names). Thanks again to everyone for a great season." Under ten minutes. The hc went up and "wow coach told me he would be quick and he wasn't kidding." A parent yells out "do the same" a bunch of people clap.
No one wants to be around all day. Tell them you appreciate them, make them feel special, let them take pictures. Go home

Ugh, ours was 4 hours...We had a big senior class and position coaches talked about each senior, then we had 6 team awards to give out. HC talked briefly about each non senior, recognized the kids that got post season honors, recognized the kids that got academic all state. Not sure what we could cut out but we did take about 30-45 minutes to let people eat before we really got going, we could probably cut some time there.

We did not talk about "non-seniors."
Just introduce them individually by team (hold applause until all have been brought up) including underclassmen on Varsity, i.e. Number, Positions, Name.
They can get clapped for as individuals after their Senior season, when they've earned it.

Just had ours today.... 7th-12th graders and cheerleaders were awarded....
I used to hate banquets but started to enjoy them when we changed formats...
We start it with overall thank you's and explain to all that we will brief with the awards and have the goal of honoring seniors.
Each HC of lower levels comes up and talks briefly (1-2 minutes) about their season then calls off names for awards, staff hands out awards and coach makes 1 nice comment on each kid as he gets it (hold the applause) then we when get to the Seniors each position coach introduces his position Seniors speaks about them for a 1-2 minutes then they come up and give a 1 minute presentation about what it means to play in our program. Then they hand off a bandana which represents their legacy carrying on through another player.
What makes the whole thing awesome is it is the kids talking about the kids, the kids, parents, and coaches don't want to see me stand up there and talk but they do really enjoy watching what each kid has to say and frankly so do I! All the kids get nice awards and honored and we get to watch them talk to each other about the impact the program had on them and the hope they have for the next group! This has changed my perspective on the banquet!

Ours was under 2 hours for JV and varsity awards for 55 kids.
We always give the seniors an action shot and their jersey. Frequently it's been the jersey we are replacing in the off season.
