Coaches,
Do you think the 85 scholarship limit placed on 1A schools instituted by the NCAA in 1994 has enabled teams like Northwestern to win the Big Ten and IAA teams close the gap? Do you also think the scholarship limits has also created the parity of big time college football? Before 1977, when scholarships limits were first introduced, the teams who could afford it gave out unlimited scholarships just so their rivals and smaller schools would not sign specific players.
The win by App. State got me a thinking about that.
I also think that teams will now prepare for everyone the same, instead of just saying they do.

yeah, it has definitely lead to parity
along with some innovations on offense
(do you think app state would have won that game if they sat in 22 personnel the whole game?)

The limitation on schollies mean that every recruit that a D. 1A school signs must be justifiable. They can't afford too many misses. If a guy doesn't pan out the recruiter who wanted him can play CYA by saying, "Look, the guy's 230 and runs a 4.4. He had 17 offers. I don't know what happened.". Guys don't want to-and really can't- take a flyer on the 6'1" lineman or the 4.65 TB who's a great player. Internet message boards just compound the problem.
A few years ago we had a great player who wasn't being highly recruited. A top 10 program had a schollie left and offered him at least partially to help them get another kid who we had who was highly recruited. The kid will finish this year as a three year starter and a month ago I filled out an evaluation form on him for an NFL team.
That's the kind of kid who play for Appy State and other top 1AA teams.

d 1aa teams benefit from d 1 A. It is not uncommon that 1 AA schools get kids who it just does not work out at 1A schools. personally I think the ncaa should do away with the 1 AA all together. they should drop down to 65 scholarships and make 1 A and 1 AA one level.
