A head coach resigned his position because he wouldn't accept a demotion to a position of an assistant head coach so another coach could "mentor" him for a season or two. The mentor is a husband of a school superintendent... Make sure you read the comments made by assistant coaches... Here is the link: www.aspentimes.com/article/20061213/NEWS/112130035/0/FRONTPAGE

I can't help thinking that this is what happens when the Dianes and the Carols run the football program...

Exactly, Ted. And no one else had the balls to tell them how monumentally stupid they were.

geez, get some balls, and fire the guy if you don' t like the job he's doing. I don't blame the guy for quitting at all. As soon as the discussion started, the damage was done.
I'm sure this coach will land on his feet somewhere. Just a shame it had to go down like that.
EDIT: I also like the "it's about the kids" BS. In the Super's mind, it's about using her power, in the assistants/alumni/whoevers minds, it's about the Ws. The teachers and that Benson fella are the only ones who actually care about the kids.

I like how the super is now an expert on football because she has seen 400 games. My mom has probably seen that many games (not all HS) and I'm not sure she could tell the Packers from the Redskins. It's a shame that a guy so loved by the kids and the teachers (and an alum) would be treated like that. And as an assistant, I agree with what has been said. If you aren't loyal to the HC then who are you loyal to. Colorado coaches take note of that gentleman's name and beware.

Wow, I can't believe how railroaded Benson just got. He got blindsided by his own staff, his AD, principal, Superintendent. Jesus, the only one's left supporting him where the janitor and the band director. I hope this guy lands stays in coaching and ends up somehwere where he can be successful and appreciated.

Assistant coach Derek Johnson disagreed. He said he and his fellow assistants liked the idea of Sirko's husband coming to Aspen to take over control of the team on a short-term basis. Under Benson, the program made great strides, but Sirko's husband could teach everyone - including Benson - a number of things, Johnson said.
Remind me to never hire this assistant, please.

Sirko picked as AHS football coach
Christine Benedetti - Aspen Daily News Staff Writer
Fri 01/26/2007 10:00PM MST
Mike Sirko -- a coach from Colorado Springs and Aspen School District Superintendent Dr. Diana Sirko's husband -- has been chosen to be Aspen High School's new head football coach, school officials announced Friday afternoon.
The former head coach, Travis Benson, stepped down in December after two years in the position, and news reports claimed that Benson quit after the athletic director and high school principal suggested he become an assistant coach under Mike Sirko.
"My choice for my resignation was simply due to the process," said Benson. "I wasn't asked to step down, but I was frustrated with some of the things that had happened before."
Benson said these reasons were more personal than administrative.
Sirko comes to the Aspen football team with 31 years of coaching experience, and 185 wins to his name. He most recently led Colorado Springs' Doherty High School to the Class 5A playoffs; they lost in the second round.
"I can't wait to work with the kids, and this is such a unique situation," said Sirko. "This is a great opportunity and I'm very excited."
Sirko said that both he and his wife have been eager for him to come back to the Western Slope; he's previously coached in Hotchkiss and Montrose.
"Over the years, I've missed coaching in a small town," he said. "This was a great opportunity to do that."
A national search for a football coach surfaced a talented pool of 10 to 12 candidates, according to Carol Sams, the high school's athletic director. A selection committee interviewed the top three finalists, and Sirko was offered the job, a part-time position paying $4,500 per year.
Sirko said there were six to seven people on the panel, comprised of school officials and community members.
A school policy prohibits employees from being directly related to their superiors, but Dr. Sirko previously told the Aspen Daily News there was no conflict with her husband as the head coach because he reports to the athletic director rather than Dr. Sirko herself.
"She deals with the academic side and I deal with athletics," said Sirko, of his wife. "Hopefully I'll have lunch with her once in a while."
A statement released by the school district said: "We look forward to having Mike as an integral part of our athletic coaching staff and our school."
The Skiers went 3-4 last season in the 2A Western Slope Conference. Previously, they had won five games in three years with a 1-7 record during the 2005-2006 season.
According to news articles, parents wanted a new coach to boost the team's competitiveness.
"It was definitely expected; (Sirko) has a lot of experience coming in," said Benson. "Aspen is not a football Mecca for coaches, and I'm sure he had the most experience, and it seems like he's ready and eager to take on the job at hand."
Benson's resignation drew some community uproar, and outspoken comments from some of the football players. At this point, Benson said he will not be involved with the Aspen football program, or another in the valley.
"I told the kids that the chance of me coaching this year in the valley is slim," he said. "I owe them more than that, but I honestly don't know what I'll be doing."
Benson's aunt, Cindy Christensen, said she was sad to see Benson go.
"He was such an involved, caring coach," she said. "He would open up the weight room early and during the summer to keep the kids going -- he's always been that type of kid."
She added that one of Benson's goals was to come back to the valley, where he grew up, to coach football.
Sirko said he would be meeting with the athletic director over the weekend, and his next step was to meet with the team.
Sams and Dr. Sirko were unable to be reached for comment.
