Which type of paint do you prefer to use to paint your field? We currently use aerosol but are being pushed by administration to use the bulk ( cheaper I guess).

You have to buy the expensive paint machine with bulk. And clean it. And service it when it breaks or gets clogged. And buy gas. And change the oil. And mix the paint with water. And if it is broke, you are out of luck. All that said, we use bulk. Lol. But thinking of going aerosol.

We have a machine for the bulk paint. It's been sitting in the corner for at least the last 20 years because nobody wants to get it working and maintain it. I have no idea what paint costs but it would have to be immensely cheaper to make us go that route.

About 10 years ago, our AD purchased one of those bulk, water based painting machines. It was terrible, never worked right, it kinda spit paint and never really put a line on the field properly. It was battery powered. At least I was able to salvage the battery for our water cart. Cleaning it was a horror show, especially when it was shared with other sports coaches who didn't have a clue about maintenance. It was one of those ideas that sounded good at the time.
At least with the aerosol you get a nice paint buzz…………lol.

we use bulk, got it new last year, it is great, although I don't have to run it, I have been lucky this last year, I get the principal, maintenance man and pe instructor to do it, I know they may try to pass it off on me this year, but I hope not, otherwise I will have to paint it on the weekend, the machine is much heavier and doesn't bounce around, it uses the 5 gallon bucket

Some of the bulk machines paint in 3 directions at once not just straight down, (from both sides angled in and straight down) not only is paint cheaper, but lines stand out much better with the multi directional machine. And the wand makes hashes and numbers and logos much easier. At previous school had the bulk machine, and a groundskeeper that kept it running. Current school has the machine that hasn't worked in forever and we use aerosol, have a good striker and a couple hand wands, but takes forever and not as clear as bulk.

Aerosol is more expensive. We use Bulk.
All things considered, Painting a field takes a long time and aerosol isn't that much faster, with having to change the cans so often. And a bulk paint machine makes the field look so much better.
You must maintain it though, if you let it slip just once, next time you paint could give you too many headaches.

I spent a few years at a rural school. We had an ole country boy maintenance guy who somehow rigged his John Deer 4 wheeler to a paint machine and painted the lines that way. It was one of the darndest things I had ever seen.
