Oooh, this is a tough one. Hard to decide on some of these.
North - Larry Kehres (Mount Union Div III) South - Leavitt (South Florida) East - Beemer (VT) West - Carroll (USC) Middle America - Stoops (Oklahoma)

North - Larry Kehres (Mt. Union - D-III) South - I hate to say it too - Urban Meyer - FL East - Frank Beemer - VT West - Pete Carroll - USC Middle America - Ron Zook - IL
I take Zook over Stoops not only because I live in Illinois, but look what he has done with the dismal program at Illinois in the short amount of time he's been there. Stoops hasn't done much since his brothers left.

This is great, and I am NOT going to vote in this poll since I posted the question, but it seems like early front - runners are...Larry K., Frank B. and Pete C.
Interesting stuff.

north boston college Jeff Jagodzinski southe vanderbilt bobby johnson east virgina al groh west standford Jim Hardbaugh midwest northwestern pat fitzgerald or prudue joe tiller
I picked the following because each school has such high academic standards that for them to be even fairly competitive means they are doing some thing special. Vandy and Northwestern have no exeptions for recruiting. you either make it with the rest of the school population or you do not.

I think you need to define the areas a bit better. Looks like some one tried to slip Spurrier into the East, I would say SC is South for sure and is Ohio St East or North

I agree on the areas. the middle of the country is big ten country, mac, and the big 12 north, minus colorado.
I am from the midwest. we consider the midwest going from ohio to nebraska in width. from canadian border down to bottome of ohio, indiana, illinois, iowa and nebraska.
I think of the north, I think of big east.
when I think of south I think of the civil war states. the sec and acc confrences.
when I think west, I think from big 12 south all the way to the pac 10 and wac.

coachcal and coachd - why not? I think it is kind of a big deal to think in those terms. Maybe not North, South, East and West, but you don't have guys you want to learn from and think are good? No offense, just curious as to your reasons.

No offense, just curious as to your reasons. I don't spend time "ranking" and "rating" coaches. You can learn from lots of coaches, but I don't bother trying to say "so and so" is the best. That is just spitting into the wind. For example, lots of "zook" votes here...and just 3 years ago..FIRED. 2 years ago, Weiss...genius. Now..Weiss..genius? Define "single best"....what is our criteria? Overall won/loss? Won/loss as compared to the prestige of the team? Etc.

Coaches: This is a good thread, and I am SHOCKED not one person has listed De La Salle (Concord, CA) coach, Bob Ladeoucer, 151 straight wins, as the best coach in the West. Not pining for him, but putting that out there. Keep em rolling. KB I guess you are now being innovative and finding loopholes with the English language. You asked the question "Who is the Single Best College Football Head Coach in the Country Right now in these 5 Regions" Then you are SHOCKED that nobody picked a high school coach? Does De La Salle high school get some type of loophole that allows their coach to be considered a college coach?

Carroll, not really. Tressell, someone else couldn't do as good with those resources? Kehres has had a great run but lets not forget those liberal admission standards at MU compared to the rest of D-III. I like guys who do MORE with LESS. Zook certainly comes to mind with the turn around at Illinois. Rich Brooks is another obvious choice. Mangione, Belotti, and Rodriguez (the job he did at West Virginia). These guys coached!

north - Larry Kehres (Mt. Union - D-III) (his record speaks for itself)
south - leavitt, south florida (started the program and took it to places no one thought possible, fast)
east - beamer, va tech (great teams year in and year out, special teams guru)
west - harbaugh, stanford (said he would beat carroll and did)
middle - mangino, kansas (bobby has done nothing since he left, and look where ku was 10 years ago)

I would choose Schiano from Rutgers as the best coach in the East (Maybe the country) Anyone who can turn Rutgers into a football power should be able to walk on water.
