This season we have a bye week during the first week of October. What do you guys normally do during Bye weeks?
Also, mid to Late October the last few seasons has been a burnout period for us and we have typically peaked early. I'm thinking we should practice maybe the Monday and Tuesday, then maybe give them the week off?

We give our kids monday off and friday off. We lift like it is out of season that one week. Tuesday practice for us will focus on indy with very little if any team or group. Wed and Thur we will have a couple of live, full speed periods. I think it is very important to get back up to live speed a couple times during the off week. Even if for just a little while. The year we didnt, we have trouble getting adjusted to our opponents game speed the week after.

Can you scout your opponent following your bye week as a team activity?

Our bye week is always Thanksgiving, so basically the first weekend in October, and it comes after training camp and 5 or 6 games, so it's a ripe time for people to overdo it. We've gotten smart enough to just shut down. We do our workouts and one "practice" with a youth team where about half our team puts the kids through a circuit of fun drills, but once we wrap up the game preceding the bye we don't meet as a staff, we don't meet with players, we don't practice for the entire week, and then we get an early start coming out of the bye and get one extra practice.
This schedule seems to have really paid off lately, I always feel awful going into the bye and then I really enjoy the last part of the season. Last year it split the season perfectly in half, and it really rejuvenated the mood of the team going into some national-level games.
I don't think it makes a huge deal physically; if we practiced during the bye we'd be sitting anyone with any injuries and resting our key guys, but the mental break is invaluable.

Can you scout your opponent following your bye week as a team activity? As in our whole team would go watch them play live? We wouldn't anyways since the team we play is a ferry-ride away, but if it was a team nearby I honestly don't think that would be productive for two reasons. 1) I kind of want to get their minds off football for a little bit, since we typically burnout during late October. 2) If we were really trying to scout, i'd rather do it on Hudl in a film session. I don't think kids would pay attention in detail when watching live, they'd just be fans of the game.

Another reason why I don't want kids around when we're scouting is that as coaches evaluating the opponent we may need to make some harshly frank comments. I don't want the kids hearing them.

Used to take our team out for bowling & pizza on bye week Friday. Lot of fun and might have helped certain kids from being knuckleheads that night.
