I've been coaching for 15 years and have been a head MS, freshman and JV coach. I know that I don't know everything about football, who does, but know that I am ready. For me, it's been a marathon.
When did the "light" go on? What is one thing or a more of a marathon where you knew you could do as good a job or better than the guy you worked for?

I "knew" I was ready to be a head coach about 10 years ago. . .
Man I'm glad that I was wrong and somebody else saw it.

I think it was probably my third or fourth year as a head coach before I was really "ready."

If I was successful with my program and strategy, i'd be ready yesterday. I could never live the life of Tom Coughlin (aptly red-faced Giants HC), though. Failure would be my downfall. It isn't... when i'd be ready... its... how long I could balance on the flag pole once I got there.

I should add... the real moment I felt I was ready:
I was nine and thought the coaches didn't prep for the game (the beer cooler was one dead give away...) and were incompetent.
And then my kid turned nine and I saw the same thing. Instead of sitting and on my ass and getting all frustrated, I got up and started reading/learning/watching/coaching. I guess thats what drives us the most... idiots. As HC now, and just another idiot, at least i'm not winging it. That's where I suppose, I drew the line and when.
At college level+... never. You guys are nuts. If I want to look like Coughlin, i'll have another shot of ol Grandad.. which is less harmful to my health.
