Connecticut just passed a mercy rule ... if a team wins by more than 50 points the winning head coach is suspended for the next game.

Well, you don't want to hurt that other teams self esteem. Maybe we should just stop keeping score altogether. Better yet, take up the pads and just play two hand touch.

The World doesn't give a rat's rear end about self esteem.

I think hawkcoach was being sarcastic.
That is really bad. I mean, what the hell is that all about? I NEVER would advocate running the score up on anyone, but that practice seems extremely severe.
If your business burys my business in profitability, does your CEO get suspended because you weren't playing nice???

I think this could result in a lot of unintended consequences. If my jv's score a TD with 2min left in the game to put us up by 51, do I let the opponent run back the kick or miss the next game against a rival? Do I start to take a knee in the third quarter of a game? What would that do to your opponents self esteem? I would never intentionally run up a score, but sometimes one team is just better than the other. At my last school, at times, we would be up 49 - 0 in the first half. The jv's would score a couple more against their varsity. What are you supposed to do?

All you can do is clear the bench and run your offense. Now, you might keep your offense limited to 2 or 3 different running plays in those situations. If I am on the bad end of 49-0, the opposing team taking a knee on 1st or 2nd down makes me as mad as if they are throwing it downfield.

As a college freshmen, I literally played on one of the worst college teams ever! I'm not joking; Sports Illustrated listed the program as one of the worst in college football (regardless of Division rank) one season prior to my arrival and we weren't any better after that! My point is we played a team that had a 50-14 lead on us, so they took a knee as they were driving for another score IN THE 3RD QUARTER!!!! We were more insulted/offended by this than if they would have tried to score. We may have been bad, but we were competitors.

what happens if you have your freshman team in the whole 2nd half, and they score some TD's? ? Up 35 at halftime, I'll pull my varsity for the 3rd quarter, and play EVERYONE else in the 4th. What happens if my scrubs score 3 TD's?

By the way, what are some state "mercy" rules? In IL, once a team gets a 40 point lead in the second half, continous clock is used--it only stops on (I believe) timeouts, scores, and possession changes.

In Utah, it's 35 points in the 2nd half. Clock runs except for Timeouts, scores, & possession changes.

Love him or hate him, I do agree with what Steve Spurrier once said when asked why he allowed his second string QB to throw in the 4th quarter of a blowout: "The reserves have a right to play too!"

If my SOPHOMORES & FRESMAN are good enough to score on the other teams SENIORS & JUNIORS, what am I supposed to do? Tell the kids to "try not to score". Can't tell a 15 year old kid that, when he is playing his (possibly) only varsity game of the season.

The rule is being referred to as the "cochran Rule" because of a coach here in CT who defeated four ooponents by more than 50 points last year and his team scored more than 70 two or three times. He was interviewed on one of the state's TV networks last night ... said then he will be suspended because he will never tell a team to stop scoring.

90% of coaching is done during the week anyway...so if he coaches them up during the week, then the assistant coach could put up 70 points even if the HC isn't there for the GAME. Then the assistant & HC can just alternate weeks. Won't really change anything.

Then the assistant & HC can just alternate weeks. Won't really change anything. It is the principle more than anything. I don't have much of a problem with the running clock but this is bs. We had a team here in Louisiana beat a team this past year I believe 95-0. The coach used the JV I believe the entire 2nd half and the JV scored at will. Should the coach be suspended because the other team was inferior? In the Football Coaching Bible, in Lou Holtz section, Lou talks about getting hammered by Bobby Bowden one game. Both guys were friends and after the game Lou tells Bobby that he can't believe that he did that to him. Bobby's reply was Lou, it isn't my job to keep the score down.

i feel bad for the conn teams. now you are going to have to tell kids to lay down, not give full effort. fumble the ball.
I know this, I would have to let other teams score. if it were close on the kick off, we would just have our players run to the sideline so the other team can score on the kick off return.
