I've read quite a few articles about how Chip Kelly and others are practicing in pads on the days before a game to get players used to the speed of the game the day before and are backing off of practice time two days before (essentially switching the traditional Wednesday/Thursday model).
I'm interested to hear some thoughts from guys who have gone to the method of a little bit more physical Thursdays and more walk thru oriented Wednesdays.
On the surface, one thing I think makes since with the new model is that if you get off the practice field at 5:30 on Wednesday, the players go nearly 50 hours without seeing a full speed rep before the first play of a game on Friday nights. It would make a little more sense to me to ramp up practice on Monday and Tuesday, give their legs a break on Wednesday and make it a more mental day, and then get them headed back to full speed feel on Thursday for Friday's game.
Obviously I would not advocate for full to the ground tackling on a Thursday, but just more full speed reps at thud type tempo like we would normally do on a Wednesday.
Any thoughts?

We follow the Oregon format; this is our second year of doing it. On Wed. we practice in helmets and shoulder pads. First 30-40 minutes is entire kicking game script. We then go to offense where we simply run plays vs coaches standing as defenders (it's almost running plays on air). These plays are the plays we want to run at certain areas of the field. We then go to defense. During defense we might have a 10 minute 7on7 where the scout team runs opponent's pass patterns, but no ball is thrown. While the DB's and LB's are doing this, the line will go over pass rush. We then have a 15-20 minute team defense period. During this time, the scout team aligns in a formation and takes 2 steps when the ball is snapped. Defense must get aligned, make any check, and get to the correct gap once the ball is snapped. That's it for Wed. Practice is about 90 minutes long. Thurs. (pregame day), players lift weights (not heavy) before going out to practice. Practice in helmets and shoulder pads. Offense goes through 2-minute drill and certain plays. Defense aligns to formations and makes checks. At the end of practice we do an entire kicking game substitution review. Practice is over in about 50 minutes. Now Mon. and Tues. are typical work days, with a 2.5 hour practice. Our kids really like this format; they have fresh legs and are definitely ready to go on Friday night. We have not lost any games as a result of our practice routine.

Bluboy: can you explain a little but more about your 7 on 7 with no ball? Are you looking to just ID the concept and match it up?

The offense come out in a formation, snaps the ball, and receivers run the opponent's patterns- that's it- ball is not thrown. The defense (LB's /DB's) make their calls and cover their man or zone. We do this a lot. We find the when we throw the ball out guys often worry more about the ball than their respective responsibility. Doing it this way gets them to focus on coverage.

coachbdud Can you detail what your Thursday practices looked like? And how did that impact what you did on Wednesday?

For those of you that do this. Do you have JV games on Monday? And if so does it impact your practice set up?

We have approximately 1700 kids grades 9-12. This past season we had 92 players in grades 10-12 and 45 on our frosh team.

yes we did it this year i liked it Coach can you give us a run down of what a normal week of practice looks like for you guys? ok so i want to explain that i stole this idea from both Chip Kelly and UCLA Heard mazzone mention they do something similar and the idea was that he didnt want to go 48 hours between turning up the intensity (i am huge on Indy time, especially with OL, and we run typically 10 minutes of team a day Mon-Wed) we are a school of about 1800 9-12th we usually have around 40 on the varsity team, mostly juniors and seniors, a couple sophomores everyone plays (or at least practices) both ways we typically practice both O and D on the same day, every day Monday - shells only: weights/condition, film, chalk anything getting added or new to game plan, practice was a quick indy time and a walk through of what was getting added or needed fixing tuesday - full gear, weights/condition, our heavy work day on O and D... lots of Indy or small group work... about 10 minutes or so at the end of team... quick whistle, never make a tackle wed - shells, weights/condition - still get some Indy work in, but will do more team stuff, drives up and down field on air, thursday - full gear, Indy, a little team, review Special teams, trick plays, special formations (wildcat for 5 minutes, running through each play on air) i usually dont do any team O against a Defense on thursday, our D likes a full scout O look but we use a very quick whistle so it isnt that we are banging and going all out thursdays, but i have found being fully geared up stops the screwing around that I have seen in helmets, kids think it is a day at the park, or free play in PE when we are in just helmets. we really spend more time on Indy and tackling drills than anything else... the team that blocks and tackles best wins... had our 1st playoff win in 30 years here this year... our blocking and tackling was significantly better than any of the other years I have been here

coachbdud,
How long are your practices? Are you running them quick and short like Oregon and doing a lot of film with your players?

Of the people that used this style...what did you feel like were the tangible examples of the benefits from it and how did the kids feel about it?

At first they were a little resistant they all thought they were gonna get hurt the night before the game but after the first couple they realized we really weren't hitting they also really loved the fact that Monday and Wed were shorts and shells days... i mean realistically if you work heads up style tackling, and stay off the legs all season long anyway... you never really NEED to wear leg pads/pants a lot of the boys would wear their combot/5 pad girdles under their shorts something about wearing shorts makes kids feel fresher and cooler Next season, if every kid would buy a combat 5 pad girdle , i wouldnt personally have a problem with wearing shorts all 4 practices a week biggest advantage was i felt it helped the focus of thursday practices... an actual football practice, not a j@ck off session where everyone is just going through the motions

How do you manage to pull this off with regards to the sub-varsity schedule both with your scout look and having all your coaches on deck?

We went to a similar format, although we play a lot of Saturday games so our Thursday is more like earlier posts re: Wednesdays.
I like the benefits everyone mentioned. In addition, I felt it kept our staff "fresher" toward the end of the season as well.

How do you manage to pull this off with regards to the sub-varsity schedule both with your scout look and having all your coaches on deck? I ask this too b/c our JV games are on Thursdays and with only around 50-60 kids in the program and 6 coaches, we might be stretched a bit thin here. I love the idea though. My question is how many of you have kids that go both ways. With anywhere from 25-30 kids on our varsity roster, we unfortunately end up w/some 2 way players. These guys take a beating as the season rolls along. I understand it's still only 3 days of contact, so that may not make a diff. Very interesting perspective. I coached with a guy that was somewhat similar, but actually gave his guys Wed. off. I'd never seen that before and I haven't seen it since, but he was a pretty decent coach and had won some games where he'd been previously. Duece
