We all say that we are committed to the kicking game. I am wondering how much of a commitment every one makes. On a side note, I would be willing to bet that those of us that have four plays in our offense/one defensive front/coverage spend more time in practice on special teams and those of us with more complicated offenses and defenses spend less time on special teams. I feel that we are somewhere in the middle in terms of complication on offense and defense. So, without getting into nitty-gritty detail, can we please share our practice plans in terms of time spent on off/def/warmups/special teams and then a very brief description of the level of complication? Thank you for sharing ;D

I think your right with your simple o/d equals more special teams vs complicated o/d equals less special teams. I'm of the school of simple fundies on special teams, no swinging gates, star burst's, etc from us....We'll fake a punt occasionally, and maybe an occasional reverse on a KOR, but not much glitz on specials from us. For us practice time wise, it is probably around 15 minutes a day of practice time. The majority of our special team time goes into punt, KO coverage and PAT/FG. I know some coaches will scream that 15 minutes a day on specials will get you beat, I politely disagree. I'd rather spend the time on offense, then defense, then specials, in that order.

Monday we spend 40 minutes on specials (2 teams - KO and KOR - at 20 minutes each) and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday we use 20-25 minutes for Punt, Punt Return, and then FG/PAT. Since about half of our games are on Saturdays, we then get a "review" day on Friday.

all special teams on thursday, we had a soccer kid kick for us so he kicked during practice on his own during the week
on wednesday we do what we call sudden change and we will run each special team during this time at least once
our offense is multiple formations and plays our defense is multiple fronts and stunts with 3 basic coverages this is where we spend most of our time

5-10 minutes each practice. Since we are MS we do not kick FGs though we are looking to change that. In 5-10 we can rep KO and KOR or P/PR enough to feel good about it. That still adds up to more Special Teams then most of the teams we paly against I think.

We believe that fundamentals and sound execution is the key to special teams success- much more so than scheme. We keep our scheme as simple as possible: one punt, one fake punt; one fg, one fake fg; etc. We spend time everyday working a special team phase. We want the scheme to be so simple that every kid on the team understands the responsibilities of every player on the field.

We spend 30 min a day in the preseason on one particular unit----ie punt team mondays, punt return Tues, etc. Then during the season its 20-30 minutes but work 2 units. In the past 2 years we have picked 13-15 guys only to do all special teams, excluding kickers, and these guys are awarded shirts that only they get. During camp we tell them the meaning of these shirts and why they are important and the squad is given a name, Black Watch. I give them the historical meaning and the shirts are numbered. We take them up every Fri night and hand them out Wed's these guys are the only ones that are allowed t owear them and they have really eaten this up. Our St'S have vastly improved in the last 2 yrs
