I need help with a project that I’m trying to put together for a class. I want to do an outline of each position and explain its purpose, techniques, scheme, drills etc.
I’ll use a DE for example; at the end of this article on DE’s, I want to answer almost every question about this position (within reason).
1) What the purpose of lining line up in the 5, 7 (inside eye of TE), 9 tech
a) What is his primary gap responsibility (c or d gap) in each tech
b) Who has the vacant gap responsibility (gap DE not responsible for)
2) Why he’s in a two or three point stance
3) What does he do in the 5 tech when he’s (the same for 7 and 9 tech)
a) Trapped
b) Hooked
c) Doubled
d) TE blocks down
e) What he does when facing the option (in situations like this I want to explain both forcing the QB to pitch and slow playing; allowing let the reader determine which is the better for their personnel or scheme).
f) And the list of possibilities goes on for this article
There are a few things that I do understand about a project of this kind
1) Yes, I understand that one article alone would be extremely large, but I have about two years to complete it (masters program).
2) I understand that there are so many different defenses that I might confuse my reader so, my plan is to focus on the 4-3. From there I can walk my SS down to make a 4-4, put Sam in 9 tech to make a 5-2 or 5-3, and maybe even walk Will and SS for a 6-2 look. I think the 3-3, 3-5 and anything beyond that will be digging a little too deep (I don’t want to confuse myself and the reader). The entire articles will cover all DE, DT, NT (for 5-2 & 5-3), OLB, ILB, CB, and Safeties.
3) I understand that there are many schemes, drills and tech to each of those positions. But, I also understand many teaching are universal and those are the ones that I will use. Example: DE facing the option. I will why he makes the QB pitch or why he slow play because they’re but popular methods. If anyone teaches anything outside of those two methods I would be very hesitant to use it unless it was coming from a very creditable sources (B. Belichick, P. Carroll, or someone of that status).
What I want from you guys a check list. I don’t know everything to know about any one position, but as a group I think we can come up with a petty thorough outline. Also, I would need the source to document all my findings. I’m not sure if there’s a book or video like this, if there is please let me know. Once I get a list of different sources together I’ll break each position down then put together an article that explains what exactly that player does, how to teach that position and what role he plays in creating an impenetrable defense. This is something I’ve always wanted to see without having to look in several different places. I think this will help young coaches like me get a bigger picture. It also gives all you Vets a chance to voice your opinions. Remember each article will only be one position at a time. My plan is to eventually do the same for offense, but nothing fancy (a basic "I" or split back formation). Before I start I would like feedback on how or what would make these article go smoothly. I want to do some problem solving before problems occur. Thanks.
