I've been reading on this board for years. I've always wondered, "What is that guy's program like?"
Who are the most successful coaches on Coach Huey?
Success is relative. I just want to hear your story.
Have you won multiple state championships? Have you built a program from nothing and made it respectable? Have you graduated well rounded young men who contribute positively to their community?
Some of you may not want to tell us your story, but I think a lot of us would be interested in hearing it.
Thanks!

bull corn huey
huey's team has gone deep in txhsfb playoffs the last few years
my team just won the school's first undefeated district title
but here is the thing
so what?
my best year coaching was with huey a long time ago on a team that was 2-8
one of the reasons for this board was the fact that the IDEAS and the logic behind them are what matter, not how great your record is---record is impacted by talent more than your coach ideas

Happy new year to everybody - and tog, I agree. My best job of coaching was with a 5-4 team that had way too many sophomores starting.

Youth Coach: 2013 record 1-7, 2014 Record 10-1. Played sound defense in 2014 and got the ball to my play makers more in 2014.
Moral of my time coaching: 'YOU CAN'T MAKE CHICKEN SALAD OUT OF CHICKEN SH!T!'
Learned a ton here on Huey.. very grateful to all coaches who share knowledge! Thanks!

Sometimes I wonder if people listen to me because they think I'm Dub Maddox.
"dubber" is just a moniker for the school from which I graduated.
My thoughts on success have evolved over the years. We are going to cycle between a 1 loss team and a .500 team year to year.
We are always at least .500 because our youth program is stellar and we lift weights better than most.
However, true success is helping a young man find confidence and learn accountability.
But I digress.....tog nailed it. If you coach high school football, then I can value your opinion.

IDK if its a whos who or what, but here is a short list of famous posters who I always read their posts. So in no particular order..... DCOhio-Great overall views of defense and life in general. Almost like a southerner trapped in Ohio CoachWoodall-always enlighting about play in the back end of the D which is one and my weaknesses and seems to have a good one liner regularly. Coach Huey-Hey, the guy founded his on website, you know he has to be freakin smart.

Worked my way up to be a coordinator for a program that always fights for a state title on a staff where the other coaches were like brothers to me. Had a few real-life personal challenges and moved to a small private Christian school; the staff doesnt get along and if youve read my other posts you know how I feel about it. But I get to incorporate my faith into my coaching, and for me thats the biggest success of all.

Im at .500 record coach. With .500 talent. Coached HS varsity...but left it for middle school.
I love coaching middle school, same personalities as varsity kids, but less girl drama and party issues becuse mommy still drives them around.
Brought a dieing program back to life...and just having a full team who competes is good enough for me.

Had three great seasons in the last seven years. I say "great" meaning I think our record reflected our talent.
Had two terrible seasons as well. I say "terrible" meaning we didn't meet my expectations as we headed into the season.
Excuses? Injuries and matchups, overmatched or outcoached I suppose. Did we win when we "should have?" and did we lose when we "should have?" - probably 95% of the time that's the case.
As stated many times, you can be 3-7 and do a magnificent job coaching 0-10 talent. You can be 8-2 coaching 10-0 talent. Who did the better job?
How do you define success? is it purely by wins and losses? or is it by outreaching your "potential?"

Thanks! We won some state championships at my old school. I left there, took a year off, then came to my new place when the OC at the old place got the HC job. It's a great gig. It's two miles from my house and I'm retired from teaching so all I do is football (I tell people that it's like coaching in college but I don't have to recruit). I'm doing the same job that I've done for over 25 years-DC/DB's/OL. Things are looking good at the new place. We started put 4-6, then 5-5, and were 9-3 last year, losing in the second round of the playoffs to the eventual state champions. We had a lot of underclassmen so we have a chance to be pretty good next year.

I'm a vagabond that can't stay in one place and hasn't won anything meaningful.
I'm moving to a school that almost made the state championship last year and has won or finished second in the section the last three years.
Doesn't really matter though, I'll still be the same guy, it's all the context.

We came 12 yards shy of a national title. I'd like to credit our success to the Best Scout O in the Nation.

My story: -Went to a high school without football -Worked hard and walked on at an NAIA school, then was awarded a scholarship the next year -Dreamed of being a part of starting a football program at my HS alma mater -Several year later it worked out that I was a part of that, been there all 10 years of the program
So basically I'm a career assistant who has had the opportunity to be a part of starting a football program at my alma mater. It's been great to be a part of giving these guys an opportunity that I never had.
My responsibilities: -Linebackers, 6 years -Running Backs, 5 years -OC or Assistant OC, 4 years -Lots of other off the field junk
Our on-field success: -10 years of football, no winning seasons in first 5 years, no losing seasons in last 5 -2 playoff appearances (2010, 2014), second round once (2010) -1 ten win season

I'm enjoying reading all of these posts. I agree that success is all about perspective. If we're teaching kids how to become successful young men, then records don't really matter. But, I know we are all too competitive not to look at the win and loss columns from time to time.

Came back to coach at my alma mater. Got my butt kicked here. Helped my old HC when he left to be the first ever coach of a brand new program. Got my butt kicked there. Came back to my alma mater and am working for a guy I greatly respect. Took a program that was 4-36 over a four year span and went 7-3-1 last year, losing in the first round of the playoffs in overtime. It's our fourth year here and I'm excited for the future. I'm not a member of the who's who club on Huey. There are plenty of those guys. I'm one of the who's that club. Lol

My story - Played High School Football All-State both ways (1st team D, hon men O). Went to a D3 college, transferred to a D2 college and transferred again and never played football again. My dad is a hall of fame coach in our state so football is in our family. I worked in the private world, got sick of it and decided it was time to teach and coach. Was blessed to land on a great staff with talented kids. I got to coach one year with another hall of fame (high school) defensive coordinator with 43 years experience (can still ask him questions related to football and life). I now split D-Coordinator duties with another guy who handles the secondary. I call the fronts and coach LBs. We run his system which is quite simple, and have now put our own foot print on it. Won state last year. Lost in state semi finals this year. Should be competitive again this year. I enjoy DC Ohio posts, but I enjoy anyone who loves the game of football. I am always looking for better ways to coach, teach, and live.
I am also a USATF Level 1 Certified Track Coach and IYCA Youth Speed Specialist Certified Coach. I am obsessed with speed and developing speed. I study that just as intensely as I study football.

Took a offensive coordinar job in oklahoma 4 years ago at a program that had won 6 games in the 4 years previous. Went to the playoffs last 3 years, losing in first round. This year as a 4 seed in our district got hot and made it to the state championship game where we lost to the district champ of our district that had previously beat us early in the year..

Let me start by saying that this board has made me a much better coach and I realize that many guys who are not HC's know a whole hell of a lot more about the game of football than i do. I was an assistant at program that to that point had football for about six years (small school). I accepted the head coaching position in the same program I was an assistant at: program was 6-43-1 in the previous five seasons before i took over. There was talk about shutting the program down. I actually tried to talk my AD out of accepting the position the night before i was to be introduced (he talked me down, he was much smarter than I). Went 6-4 in our first year and have only had one losing season in ten years. We had a 9-2 and 10-1 team in years 3 and 4 and, despite turning around a nearly dead program, got the tag of not being able to win the big game. Our highlight was running the table and going 13-0 a couple of years ago, winning a state title in an NFL stadium with 33 kids in the entire program against a Catholic school with 100+ kids in their program. We have seen a lot of great kids come through (as athletes, students, and people), had a lot of success (75% win percentage) and I have a loyal, hard working group of assistants. It is a ton of work at a small school but with all the right pieces in place (administration, parents, kids, coaches) and on board, good things happen. There is nothing better than helping kids grow and become a part of them becoming great men down the road.

When I found the board I was a 19 year old in Alaska coaching on an air force base. 10 years later I just finished my 3rd year as a head coach in Wisconsin. I have been on staff at the school for 7 years now. We have made the playoffs (which is easy to do comparable to other states) in 4 consecutive seasons but i'm still looking for my first winning season as head coach. We have come a long way as a program, but we have light years to go still. For the state, talent is average, my coaching staff works hard but has a lot of room to grow. Enjoying the journey but not settling for where we are at.

I'm in year 22 of coaching. Feel like I know nothing. Contemplating getting out after my kids go through (youngest son is 7th grader). Over a 15 year period won 80% of our games include two sectional titles. Last two years we have gone 3-17. It's like getting kicked in the balls by a donkey. School is in one of the toughest leagues in the country. I have a lot of excuses I could use...but getting better is at the top of the list. I'm a Cancer. Love long walks on the beach. I also am @coachinggripes And the real me is tothehouse Though Griping is much more fun.

The funny thing about the forum is that I've chatted with some guys here for years-some going back to before Huey's, to Pigskin Preps and Toby's. I know their philosophies, personalities, and even their families but if they walked into a room I wouldn't recognize them and they wouldn't know me.
