Here is my question: I am considering applying for ahead coaching job. I do not have a real open relationship with the head coach I am working for. So, when do you tell him you are looking at this job? Before you apply, as soon as you apply or wait until they ask for references/ interview time?
I know ideally you tell him right away, but I am not real comfortable talking with him about these sorts of things. He is not a guy that is easy to approach. Any suggestions?

would he fire you or demote you if you told him you were looking? if so, you need a new job anyway

Staringfrog,
If you don't feel comfortable and you can't even approach him. why would you want to continue to coach their? Doesn't sound like a good situation to be in-in the first place...

just make sure he finds out from you NOT someone else. i have always been upfront with the coaches i've worked for when applying for other jobs. although i haven't done this too often, i let them no WHY i am applying. for me, it's been for family reasons, to "move up",,,,the next move i make will be to take over a program. i don't see how your boss could hold that against you. when i left the last school i was at i told the hc exactly why i was applying -- "coach, i want to move back home to be near my parents and allow my daughter to grow up around them. i'll either work here or at this school that i applied at. no other reason than that."
when i decide to apply for a head coaching job i'll say pretty much the same thing. "coach, i love it here. and i'll never consider a lateral move. but, i do wish to be a head coach so i'm applying at this school."

Guys,
I appreciate all of the insight. I was kind of thinking along the same lines, but just wnated to bounce the idea off of you. After all, that's what this site is all about right?
