I am relatively new to coaching youth football...I am looking for good resources to increase my football knowledge...books especially...but any resource would be great....suggestions? these kinds of questions are tough, because what you should be reading completely depends on what you are doing... Head Coach? Offensive Coordinator? Defensive Coordinator? Position Coach? But the things i would do regardless is GO TO GLAZIER CLINICS, they are 100% free to youth coaches, allow you to go to talks from HS/NCAA/Pro Coaches, network...tons of things.

I appreciate the response...I have heard a lot of great things about Glazier...it will be my next resource. I should have been more specific....I am a head coach for HL in the fall...lucky to have some great fellow parents to share the duties with some decent knowledge...as well as a position coach for a rep team in summer...OL/DL...8-10 year olds...and moving up to 13-14 this year...a big jump in skill set. I was given advice from a very successful coach in our area...to read as much as I can and to understand as much as possible about all positions...and different points of view.

Cool! i coach 13-14 as well (Middle School). the biggest thing is fundamentals for each position. you need to understand every step that you want a player to take so that you can teach it. i'm actually going through this exercise myself because we are changing up some of our defensive positions. as a defensive coach, i need to be able to explain the Alignment, Stance, Key, and Assignment (ASKA) of every position in every call.... we spend alot of time in the off season (just coaches, no players) birddogging our steps...we actually get onto the field with shields and make sure what we are telling players to do is: 1) Doable - (ive heard coaches tell players things that could only be possible if you had 4 eyes and 6 arms) 2) functional - does this actually have the desired outcome. what is your schemes of choice? what are you running with these kids? sometimes its better just to learn more about what you are GOING to run, then understanding everything

not so sure what we will be running at the older group....will be handed the playbook when we meet after Christmas....lots of power...iso...toss I assume....always been a power running team with a stout defense. The younger group we run DW....we have had great success with it being undersized and having some speed...definitely makes an average team better. We play canadian rules with four downs...our motion rules makes it easier to seal the edge and backside...without pulling lineman.. as sweep is king at that age. I will probably continue with it into the next age group to keep consistant with players I have moving up...my concern is am I doing a disservice to OL as DW doesnt help to create a better lineman....and at these levels it is about development. I do spend a lot of time in indy using splits..simple folds and cross blocks as well as working on chipping but not the same as game time. Our system has worked well for that age group but I/we are looking to increase our knowledge of the game as our players move up. This site has been a great help

I am relatively new to coaching youth football...I am looking for good resources to increase my football knowledge...books especially...but any resource would be great....suggestions? Clinics: - Glazier - Nike COY - Anything local put on by your area colleges or high schools Websites: - CoachHuey.com - DumCoach.com - Delphi Forums - Google whatever schemes you want to run and you'll find a plethora of sites devoted to various systems Camps: - Offense/Defense (full pads/contact) - Pretty much all colleges and a lot of high schools put on some type of off season (typically summer) camp Books/Videos - National Football Academies (Darin Slack). By far the best thing for QB play, but they also have camps and materials for other positions (especially receiver) as well. - Winning Youth Football (Dave Cisar). Dave's materials are excellent. Even if you don't want to run his schemes (SW and WT6), there is a ton of value in his materials wrt practice planning, teaching kids, developing character and generally approaching coaching in a professional manner. - Youth Football Guru (Glen Harris). If you want to run spread, Glen's stuff is a great place to start. - Coaches Choice. These guys have 100s (1000s?) of videos for every coaching topic imaginable. Some are great, others not so much. Look for the topics you're interested in and check out the reviews and buy one or two at a time. I generally always pick up 1 or 2 at every Glazier clinic I go to (they always have a booth/station at the Glazier clinics). - Jeff Teed ( www.coachteed.com). He collects playbooks and will trade with you for free or sell you a collection of 100s (1000s?) of playbooks for $20-$30. There's plenty more out there, but that should be more than enough to get you started. Good luck.

wow... you are just going to be handed a playbook? kind of makes teaching interesting if you aren't sure what you are running.... my typical rule is, we dont install anything unless i've studied it for alot longer then a single off season.
but, your assumption that the DW doesn't help OL at the next level is so beyond incorrect. being able to read Odd/Even fronts, block by rule (Gap->On->Down...etc), pull and trap with your eyes up..those are REALLY important skills and should be mastered by every Offensive Linemen. Look at what wisconsin/stanford..etc are doing. lots of DW principals in the OL. but the "pro style" zone guys will try to convince you otherwise...to them its all about pass blocking with mile wide splits (yes, let the flame war begin).

The Glazier youth scholarships seem to be discontinued this year so i don't think they are free to youth coaches this up coming year. But the season pass is still worth it even if you only go to one clinic as the video content on the Glazier site is available with the pass. efootballflix.com is an inexpensive subscription website full of football clinic videos.
I agree with 33 coaches opinion on dw blocking being of value in hs. Zone teams will still have a gap scheme where rule blocking, trapping and pulling is used. Plus, I think football is very cyclical and I firmly believe power schemes are on the way back in.

Thank you again for the insight..we have a Glazier clinic close to home in a few months....I hope to attend but if unable I will definitely make use of what is available online. My point on DW line play was not to discount the value of what is taught....I love the offense at this level...makes an average team competitive by virtue of the system. My point is that some teams that ran DW struggled in the higher age groups as the OL had a hard time adjusting to a split of any kind...reaching and blocking in open space and my point was to maybe change up what we do as we progress and prepare for what they will face as they move up...just my humble opinion

It just popped up a few days ago. Great news for youth coaches. I'll end up spending the money at the clinics anyway.
