What can/should you do to ensure that you get the interview for the job opening you are dying to get? The resume has been sent, along with cover letter and references. The job has been posted for almost two weeks. Would it be appropriate for me to call the AD and see how things are progressing? Have one of my references call?

If a sensible person is in charge of hiring, the best thing you could do is have your most influential reference make a personal phone call, or visit if the distance is appropriate.

This year I have had more interviews than in the 4 prior years combined...I think its because my manual and packet are nicely presented. Show organizational skills, passion and interest...nothing wrong with a follow up phone call...however, i had references call and have "very nice discussions" with an AD at one school...and didnt get an interview...it happens.

Basically it is all a numbers game anyway. More stuff you send to places, more chances to get noticed. I have found that when your name gets in the "pool" you will be contacted to send your stuff more often. Last year my name hit the pool, and thus I was contacted for more jobs..."would you be interested?" type phone calls. Also network like a bitch, I have also found the old statement, "It is not what you know, but who you know." is very, very true! Having a father who is an administrator, a phone call is okay....but not 2 or 3 phone calls, as than you are an "annoyance".

I think that it is good to just stop in and check. ask to see the AD for a moment, if you can't see him just leave a short hand written note asking what is going on.
