I am interested in the hearing...
What is the absolute best (one) thing you do as a coach?
What is the absolute best (one) thing your team does as a program?

1. Create drills that maximize efficiency of reps and accurately simulate things my players see during games.
2. Read and react to keys.

As a DC, I think the best thing we do is a different form of pursuit drill every day to start defensive practice. We might not be very good but by god we are gonna run to the football as long as I am in charge. It shows on Friday nights, and you can overcome alot of mistakes with effort and pursuit.

If you can't hold up against Inside-Off Tackle Run Pursuit won't matter.
All you're doing is conditioning at beginning of practice under the guise of "effort."
Spend more time on defeating blocks, reading keys.
Kids do Pursuit Drill every play during Team.

I see well designed/ran pursuit drills as a part of teaching correct run fits. If you don't have correct run fits you can't stop the off tackle play among a number of other things.

I recognize that i have a lot to learn and I have a great passion for continuing to learn more every rep, practice, game, season.
What is the absolute best (one) thing your team does as a program? We focus on being classy, upstanding young men first. There are years where you just won't have the talent to win a lot of games, but you can always produce respectful, polite, great kids. Sent from my VS985 4G using proboards

How do you know how we spend the rest of the time? We do pursuit for 5 min, then we go to individual afterwards. We hold up just fine against power run so far, 13 pts, and 7 points given up. We are gonna give great effort and we are gonna run to the ball, we stress that and we believe in that. It doesnt mean we dont work hard to have correct run fits, or play with proper technique because we do.

I don't know how you spend the rest of your time.
And I said IF you can't stop inside-OT runs etc. Didn't imply your team doesn't because I have no way of knowing.
I said doing Pursuit Drills every day are unnecessary.

Teach drive blocking. I am not the best at this, but it is what I do best.
Care about our kids. This is what our program is about.

I gotcha. But we will have to agree to disagree. Perhaps it's over kill. But we are gonna do some form of pursuit every day. This week is was combined with a pass or a screen as we prepare to face an air raid tomorrow night.

Seriously (sometimes I can't help myself, sorry) 1-Keep the big picture in focus. I serve as the defacto defensive quality control coach for our program, because I am always the guy plotting trends, keeping the practice routine going, raising questions over concepts, factoring intangibles, etc.... 2-Honestly it might simply be turning out freakishly good athletes, but from a coaching stand point I would have to go with focusing on the whole person not just the athlete.

Does Tuesday night pizza help with this. I think teams that spend more time together care more about each other as people and that helps team atmosphere. Not sure if it is personal preference or there is real correlation.

1. Put kids in the right positions (especially defensively) to take away an opponents strengths and maximize our kids abilities.
2. Play physical on both sides of the ball, a thread that runs throughout the teams in our program.

Not sure if it is personal preference or there is real correlation. That is just one thing we try and do that doesn't necessary have anything to do with football. Not that these are out of the ordinary, but here are some of the things that our program does: -positions groups go out after practice to get wing/pizza/etc.. with their position coach -FCA huddles -take trips to visit churches that have invited the team to be feed -guest speakers to talk about various topics dealing with life lessons -study halls -one on one contacts with players -take kids to college ball games -Sack meals for the kids to take home after practice if they are in need -team meals from time to time not related to being a pre game meal -kids wear their jerseys on Thursdays and go to their elementary school and open car doors in the morning -visit at risk kids in the elementary and middle schools -select 2 teachers to be 'guest coaches' for each game. they get to go through our whole game day routine and have a 'coaches shirt' (tshirt) -help out with youth clinics We also do stuff throughout the year to help maintain the team esprit de corps. I know these aren't really anything out of the ordinary, but the main thing is that we constantly remind them that their football careers are short and we fail as coaches if we don't work to make them better future husbands, fathers, and community members. When a kid does something wrong that warrants a punishment, that is the theme of the meeting - we're doing all this because we want you to be a better person.

We have a small team, so I know most cannot do this, but as a position coach you can.
As a coach, I get to know my players personally. Their problems, their families. I let them know I care about them beyond the field. They would run through a brick wall for me.
As a program, we do things together off the field. It may just be helping out a single mom or elderly person with their yard. They come to know each other better, and learn to be a team.

1. Builds rapport with kids and creates a team pride to the point where they want to play for something other than themselves.
2. Deals well with adversity, almost to the point where they expect something to go wrong, and when it happens, they shrug it quickly and get back to the task at hand.

Sorry for the late response We play at downhill style on both sides of the football pro I base on offense and attacking 4-4 and 43 on defense. Because we have low numbers we can't practice physical all of the time it tends to be more of a mentality anything than else we emphasize great double teams we emphasize great knock out blocks and we emphasize playing on the other side of ball. Our kids now I've done this for many years and I bought in what we are doing. It is now an expectation of the program
