Gentlemen-
I am looking for any system or way of teaching leadership skills on our team. I believe that leadership is over talked and under taught.
Thanks

Saintrad,
In no particular order some things we have done over the years:
1. BFS “be an 11 program”. The program is a bit simple (simple concepts and reading level)… good for younger players (9th grade or Junior High)
2. Senior meetings reviewing leadership. Past topics (5 meetings in the spring): Sportsmanship, Intensity, Affirmations (Write it, do it), Community Involvement project and Team Rules
3. Conditioning groups lead by seniors. Divide up seniors and have them run conditioning (we do this 1 of the 4 days per week). They take attendance, plan the drills, etc.
4. Captain’s apply for the position- letter of application and interview
5. Player’s Council- to instill leadership in younger players
some other things that help unity, and promote leadership are dividing up duties (locker room or weight room clean up) by class (weekly). All guys seem to take responsibility- first when it is their week, then during all weeks… responsibility helps promote leadership

Our Head Coach is Marine Veteran. He has incorporated a number of leadership skills from the Marine Corp. We constantly talk to our seniors and juniors about Servant Leadership. Anything on Marine Corp leadership training is good and is very useful. We have been very happy with the results that we have gotten with many of these skills and lessons.

i have had many classes in college (attended a christian university) and servant leadership was one of my favorite classes. I too am former military, US Army, and everytime i try to bring up leadership ideas with the former HC or the current admin, they get all liberal and shy away from any type of leadership training.
I was spending a lot of time this last season trying to instill a work ethinc and servant leadership ethos, but was running into the HC pulling his "non-letterman" work and the others can leave the field. Never was one for that. I always treated my men the same way i was treated and did everything they did. Repsonsibility, accountability, and dependability was my focus. Was I too off base?
