What's the best device for tackling? I know there used to be some machine that had a dummy that you hit & wrapped...then drove it backward to a locked position. Do they still make that one ? Is it the best one ? If you can, please give a site, brand name, etc. Thanks.

Honestly the single best addition to practicing tackling we've had is a couple of crash pads- like they use for high jumping. You are tackling a person, get to hit and wrap and then drive the man violently into the pad. The pad eliminates the single greatest factor for an injury- hitting the ground. Players love it and as coaches you do not worry about a kid getting hurt being driven into the ground. I also use it to have o-lineman practice finishing a defensive man, hit drive and finish into the pad.

I think generally the more something is on a fixed track, the less realistic it is. You don't have to have balance or wide feet to stay square. That's why the Crowther 2 man and the 1 man "S" sled are my favorites. Get out of square and it will turn on you.

at my old school we had a blaster for the RB's, our DC made a tackling station using the blaster. He would put a small agility bag in between the first set of tires and the defender would have to rap up the agility bag and drive it through the blaster. We saw carry over with drill on Friday nights with kids rapping up and driving the ball carrier to the ground improve dramatically.

Allows the guys to get the feeling of a perfect form tackle on an actual person no machine can simulate that. It also provides high comedy when its the dl's turn on the pad can't go wrong watching the fatties tackle each other. And we have also found that frosh. are better tackling devices than soph. their bones are still soft at that age LOL
